Yes, the car uses its momentum to charge the battery if you are coasting or using the brakes. I think this is stated in the owner's manual. You can also feel a slight release when you coast down to a minimal speed (around 10mph) and the charging mechanism decouples.

On the plus side, since this behavior slows the car a bit, it can extend the brakes' life in the long term assuming you're the type that coasts to slow down. The factory rotors and pads on my '17 3-series were in perfect condition when I sold the car at ~37k miles.

Maybe off topic, but while you are reviewing your z4... do 2 sets of golf clubs fit in the trunk? I am considering the z4 but this will be a must.

I seem to recall another thread on this. Someone said they could but the drivers and long woods would have to ride behind the seats.
