So the Balvenie 12 doublewood is great and I've finished about half the bottle already lol. Now I'm looking to buy a bottle of macallan 12, can someone provide their input on the 12 sherry oak and the 12 double cask? And which one they prefer?

Both completely different...

Balvenie Doublewood 12 is very light and matured in 2 different woods... i.e. 2 different casks. This will be closer to Macallan Double Cask 12 (blue box) which is aged in a European and American Sherry Cask.

The Macallan 12 or Sherry Oak 12 (black box) is just one cask... the European Sherry cask. This cask is far more stronger in taste and is considered the classic taste. The sherry is my favorite but it's not for everyone.

Thanks. When you say it's not for everyone why is that? What should I look out for, considering it is around 75 I don't want to waste it on something I may not like. I did watch some reviews too on it.

The sherry taste is just strong, that's not something that everyone likes... I love it.

The double cask 12 works for more people but the sherry 12 is better inmho.

I would get the Sherry 12.

Thank you I will give the sherry 12 a shot!

I already got the double wood so getting the macallan double cask is very similar anyways.

All these totally blow away the black label that I usually drink more occasionally lol. No comparison!

My norm is Glenlivet 12. My favorite right now and for the past 3 years has been Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 is really smooth. When my fathers around he still likes the blend Buchanan’s 18 is his go to and I will indulge on that bottle also.

Problem is it gets pricey lol. I'm halfway through a 60 dollar bottle in less than 2 weeks and I was drinking it conservatively.

I'm actually not a fan of the Macallan 12 yr, specifically the double cask. The 15 is twice as good but not twice as expensive. Balvenie 15 is also good.

Any Japanese whiskeys in the $60-70 range are solid if you like smooth and smokey. Ex: Suntory Hibiki
Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition (blended) is a good cheaper bottle.
Glenfiddich 14 and higher.
Any Glenmorangie.
Highland Park 18.
Any Lagavulin.
Any Oban.
Dalmore 12/15 for sherry and orange notes.
Wild Turkey, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve (double oaked) for bourbon.

This is interesting to me. I really don't get a ton of smoke, or a ton of flavor compared to most other stuff, from Japanese whisky. I think they are generally very smooth and have a lighter palate that allows for some good subtle notes - but I have not had one that knocked my socks off. They are also pricey for what you get IMO.

The Oban is another one, a good drink but just overly expensive for what you are getting. I think most of the Highland Park are good offerings for an entry level of smoke (even the 12 is pretty good IMO)

I was a lot more into Scotch but anymore I really find the American whiskey to hit my palate better, that and Islay Scotches so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I think Japanese whiskeys make for decent recommendations since they are generally smooth and easy to drink. Most of these could be considered overpriced, though. The only one I would really go back and buy is the Macallan 15 (I don't drink much in one sitting).

I cycle between Japanese beers (specifically craft ones), vodka (Moscow Mules), and whiskey.

Nice fiance. That was one of my first bottles. It’s nice but I think overall I just prefer Scotch over Irish, Japanese, and American whiskey. My bday is in October as well.

Yeah she said she just walked in and found a nice looking bottle lol, nonetheless she did well. I'm warming up to Scotch, picked up a bottle of Glenmorangie and Glenlivet about a month ago. Fan of each. Japanese whiskey might be my top as of now, have a bottle of Hatozaki that I really enjoy.

Run Silent - ok, you piqued my interest. I picked up a bottle of Macallan Classic Cut and will likely try a dram sometime this week. I haven't met a scotch from the Macallan distillery that I didn't like, and I suspect this will be no exception.

I've also ordered a splurge bottle from the LCBO at a price point I've never bought in before, should take a week to arrive. Going to get the Glenfarclas 25 year old. I'll see what like that is - better be good at $270 / bottle! But just to really depress me about the insane cost of liquor up here, what does the Glenfarclas 25 year old cost in the States?

I hate you. Ok, I mildly dislike you. Ok, you are a good person and aren't the problem. My country is. It's insane - something like 83% tax on the original retail price.

But the states vary sometimes significantly in price from state to state don't they and even county to county? I thought I'd heard that - both selection and price are different, and there isn't a central board that regulates prices.

And let me tell you, a central board (like I have) is stupid. I'd far prefer there to be competition and a free market.

You win some, you lose some. If you ever make it to Iowa I'll show you the path of truth and you will leave an American whiskey lover.
