Steamboat and a 5D mkII

Got to test out my new 5D Mk II out at Steamboat this past week. It was AWESOME, I am in love with this camera and the 24-70mm 2.8 L.

I will say it's gonna take a little bit of getting used to the FF sensor's width with out the crop factor though. Gonna be using my 70-200 f/4 a lot more now I think.

Here are just a couple of shots I took. The first two are stitched panoramic photos made from 8-15 images.

Nice pics. We go to steamboat every year and it's hands down my favorite place to ski/ride in Colorado.

Only been to Steamboat in the summer. Usually in Keystone for boarding....

What bag did you use while riding? Or did you just take it up and back down?

Nice pics too!

Bought a Tamrac Adventure 9 backpack for the trip.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._Backpack.html

Held up really well. I wore it for a few hours each day but then dropped it off so I could go let loose in the trees and such without worrying about it. I woulda gone for something with more camera room in it but figured it'd be good for bringing my laptop out on the trip with me (it stayed in the townhouse though).

Did you use any filters on those pics? The panos are sweet!

Nice bag.

I'm always too nervous to carry my gear while boarding. Sucks too cause it would be nice to get some cool shots at the terrain parks.

I was pretty conservative when I had it on... I slipped once but was able to roll a little onto my side so I didn't knock it on the ground or anything. The 5D is built to handle some tough conditions... photojournalists are jumping in and out of fox holes in Iraq/Afghanistan with this thing... they're built to handle some bumps and stuff. The lenses on the other hand...

don't really wanna find out.

I bought the Lowepro Flipside 300 before my vacation two months ago. It was solid... very comfortable and easy to get things in and out of. It's a bit smaller than the one you bought though.

Thats the one I wanted but I waited till the day before I left to go get one so I had to go out to a retail store. For being probably one of the bigger photo/video retailers in the world, Calumet had a pretty shitty selection of gear at their shop out in the suburbs. Shoulda gone downtown but was short on time.

wasn't brave enough for that yet. Plus my hands aren't very steady yet for shooting legit vids with panning and zooming and all that.

hahaha thanks man... its cuz I'm actually out and shooting more often. Changing my major to Photography was the best decision I've ever made.

I'm sure having nicer equipment now doesn't hurt either.

great shots!

And my 24-70 has been rock solid, i wouldn't freak out about small knocks on the lens, the lens was built tough, just not as tough as the body.

it can take the weather too.

i saw a buddy of mine drop his crop body amateur camera body on some rocks while he was changing lenses, it survived no problem scraped it up a bit, but nothing went wrong internally.

first comment from him though "glad that wasn't the lens!!!"

I've also had a friend call me up because she dropped her husbands lens and was freaking out, so she asked me to come look at it.

i pick it up, and unscrew the UV filter and the thing was perfect. it just needed a new filter, she didn't know it had one on.

So moral of the story, pick up some UV filters, or just the screw on protectors, they do help.

Yeah... $1500 for a lens and to not spend $40-80 on a filter to protect is a sin

On the contrary, some people believe that putting an extra glass element in front of a $1500 lens is a sin...

I don't use UV filters unless I know I'll be close to the water/thick dust/sand. If i were shooting in the snow I'd probably use one.

to each his own... when its paid for by my own pocket (meaning if it breaks I gotta come up with another $1500 to replace it) then a $60 ultra thin UV filter is fine by me.

if i'm on someone else dime and shooting only in a studio... different story
