Michelin Pilot Super Sport - ROAD NOISE

Got myself a 2020 G29 last year with 23 000 km on the tyres (Michelin Pilot Super Sport). I put on Nexen winguard sport tyres on the stock rims for the winter and just switched back to the summer tyres.

I noticed right away how much louder the Michelins are. The road is roaring in the cabin like a jet engine. I can also really feel the road in an uncomfortable way. The nexens gave me a smooth, quiet ride even in warm spring weather.

The thread depth is fine but they do have 25K+ km on them now.

Is it time to change them up? I am going an a 2 week roadtrip in June and cant deal with this noise after getting used to the much quieter nexens.

Most folks are getting 24k-32k km on them so, yes, you’re probably close to needing a new set.

Ok good to know. I will be driving the autobahn too so safety must be top.

Considering the Continental PremiumContact 6. Any suggestions on tyres would be appreciated.! I value comfort, low noise and (rain) safety above everything. I dont track or drive like an idiot (mostly).

Which sizes is your particular car running?

Due to the staggered setup, tires with availability on stock sizes for both front and rear are more limited than you'd think.

The Continental extremecontact sport 02 are well regarded for noise and performance.

If you care less about performance something like the premium contact 6 you mentioned would be good options.

I would stay with the Michelin Pilot Sports. In my opinion, they are an awesome tire. I think your road noise is due to them needing replacement soon. I have owned these tires on several cars and it’s the only summer tire I will buy. I have the all season version on the wife’s Volvo and they are great.

275/40/18 in the back, 255 in the front. Unfortunately the extremecontact doesnt seem to be available here in Switzerland (yet). I have seen the great reviews.

Completely agree. Awesome summer tire. Just be careful if the temps dip…cold weather traction is for shit.

Yeah they seem to be very well liked and are also "bmw approved" if that matters. Perhaps my tires are just old like you say.

I switched from Conti’s to the PSS* last year. Bit more tire noise but not bad IMHO. It was worth it for the pros of that tire. More feel, stickier, more communicative at the limit.

If in your shoes and available in Switzerland, I’d consider the Michelin Pilot All Season 4, performance almost as good as PSS and PS4, excellent performance in cold and light snow, 50% longer tread life.

Which Contis though? Was it the Sport Contact 6 some of the vehicles shipped with?

Not available in 275/40/18 here. So annoying. I will contact my BMW stealership, maybe they can get them for me. Looks like a smart option since it can get icy up in the alp passes even during summer.

It seems what I have available here are:

MICHELIN PILOT SPORT 5
MICHELIN PILOT SUPER SPORT

Anyone have any insight on the difference? Which would be best for regular cruising and the occasional spirited drive on twisty mountain roads?

The sport 5 replaces the sport 4… this line is more for performance in the wet and dry. This is not the PS4S replacement, it’s a lower tier.

The PSS/PSS* handles those mountain roads the best in my experience. Tire has been around a long time. It won’t perform as well in the rain though as the PS4S, which I don’t think is available for the sizes of the Z4. I could be wrong about that. But regardless, I’d go for the PSS*.

According to his profile bmwz4g29driver is located in Europe and I am not sure what is available over there for Star tires. However in the US, Tire Rack offers the correct 19 inch front and rear sizes in BMW Star tires for both the PSS and the PS4S. They are considered "Maximum Performance Summer" tires and Tire Rack gives them identical ratings for both dry and wet conditions. The PSS have been the OEM 19 inch tires since the Z4 was launched with the exception of some Continentals being substituted in some of their recent production.

The PSAS4 is consider an "Ultra High Performance All-Season" tire but Tire Rack gives it slightly lower dry/ wet ratings but a slightly better tread wear rating.

There are newer tires than PSS, PS4, and PS4S. What's the fixation on old Michelins?

Tried and tested I suppose. But it really doesnt feel great to buy a 10 year old tire. Do you know any newer tires that would be good with the G29?

Michelins are absolutely the best tire and they do a collaboration with BMW M (and have for a long time) to provide OEM * tires that have different compounds in the tread to improve driving performance.

I say this based on my experience with a number of tires including pirelli and continental, and in the context of BMW only.
