If your phone supports it (my iPhone 8 Plus is too old), you can use your phone to open/unlock your doors & start the car. No key(fob) required.

Yep, it didn't show it as an option until I selected the wireless charger, and don't know what it could have been

ebirotedu noted something to do with remote start/unlock from the phone...Is that really it? seems like an odd option to 'delete'.

EDIT: just read up on the 'digital key'. Seems a phone can replace the keyfob using low energy bluetooth connectivity, and when you place the phone in the tray, allows you to start/operate the car. So, for that near field technology to work, it seems you may not/cannot charge at the same time. The phone also allows you to open the car (moving the phone close to the drivers side door handle) - again, replacing the keyfob. It also seems like this is a 'paid service'? I don't know, this is all in a few minutes of research.

The wireless charger and digital key programming bay are in the same location in the center console; I assume that the physical hardware conflicts so you can have one or the other but not both.

My iPhone 8 will lock/unlock my z4 and will tell me the status of the windows and top, but won't open/close the windows, the top or start the car.

Interesting. I tried to set it up with my 8 Plus and the Z4 said my phone wasn't supported. It wasn't something I was dying to enable, so maybe I gave up too easily?

You mentioned that you only got the digital key when you selected the wireless charging option.
Due to the chip shortage I never received the wireless charger.

I will need to dig around in the iDrive and see what I did or did not got.

I have the wireless charger option and can unlock my car, remote start it, etc. from the app. Not sure why you would need the digital key.

Presumably the app won’t do any of those things if you’re not connected to a network. The mobile key is proximity based.

The digital key is a replacement (more or less) for the key-fob. Placing your phone (or key card? I think some vehicles on the market have keycards) in the 'charging' slot would allow you to start and drive. It's built into the phone/car.

The app allows the start/stop etc. via a cellular signal (presumably, like other manufacturers apps, e.g. Ford) and is different from the digital key.

The digital key option should also (in theory) allow an Apple Watch to do the same as the phone - unlock as you approach, etc. - as if it was a key fob.

At least you have everything else. I'm missing the charging tray too and I can say I do miss it, but I can make do without. I'm also missing the garage opener and that does suck...

When I initially placed the order, I was told park assist, HUD and LED headlights were a no go.
Further communications with BMW and 5+ weeks later I got a 2 month later production date with all the forbidden fruit that I wanted. Ultimately I got the car that I wanted and in these times I consider myself very very lucky.
Without the forbidden fruit I would not have gone ahead with the order - not for that amount of cash.

I don't miss having the charging tray one bit and for $16 you can always get a coiled 3 foot charging cable on Amazon. 😉

I think that is the way I will go rather than fussing with a charging tray retrofit if that is even possible.
