I built a precision ar as well for shooting paper.
I like that. Good advice. Hitting man sized targets with rds is no problem at these ranges. More practice for me.

Try shooting braced. Almost as good as shooting from rest. Use a tree or whatever is available. Don't do ninja movie shit just basics.

Right now I have BUIS, red dot and scope 3x-8x.

I tried my friend's 3x fixed prism optic and it was really really nice on a 100 yard range. Clear big sight picture, fast enough with more precision, compact package. Still not as fast as red dot at close range. I'm tempted to add but feel like there is overlap with what I have.

Then there are the 1x-4x scopes that sound like a doable all in one for what I want. Here I'm not sure if it is as fast as a red dot at 1x and not sure if I'd be happy with only 4x on the long end.

From your ownership or usage experience what do you guys like/recommend?
If one of your main purposes is for home defense, I'd go with a quality red dot. Aimpoint T1/H1 if you have the money, or a PRO if you are looking for a bit lower price point (I have a PRO and love it). I haven't kept up with the latest since I've been overseas for several years, but I think Aimpoint released another decently priced red dot.

If you're really on a budget, either the Bushnell TRS-25 or any of the decent ones from Primary Arms and similar companies.

However, my main push for going with Aimpoint is because of their battery life. You can leave the AR on home defense standby constantly on 24/7... the battery life is tens of thousands of hours.

Blew the cobwebs out of my Lee-Enfield No.5 'Jungle Carbine' yesterday for our clubs 100yrd 20th Century World War battle rifle competition...so not a piece of plastic/polymer to be seen

Nice mix of No.4's, No.5's, P14/P17's, K98's and a lone 1903 Swedish Carl Gustaf.

No.... they are banned in UK (all full-bore semi-auto rifles have been banned in UK since late 1980's)

You can own a 'straight pull' full-bore version of a semi-auto rifle design, and there is a company in the UK that imports a 'new-build' straight pull Garand from a company in Luxemburg that manufacturers them (LuxDefTec). They are VERY expensive though, (equivilent of USD2500) so there aren't many of them in the UK. They have to be built to order, in small batches, as they have to be new build, can't be 'converted' originals.

Wow, that is truly sad in so many ways. I've never heard of a straight pull M1 until now. Do they look essentially the same, but you just use the operating rod handle to reload like a bolt action?

Not to 99.75% of the UK population, 100% of the UK media and 99.5% of UK politicians........

Yes, look identical, and yes essentially, there's no gas operation, and you have to manually cycle the handle to eject/cycle a new round each time. They still go 'ping' though after the last round....

If you search on Youtube for 'straight pull Garand' you'll find a few clips of them at ranges here in the UK.

While your 1 AR can be setup for fast-on-target home defense as well as 250+ yard groupings, the optic is what will make the difference there.

I agree with 1MOREMOD and stooker, start with a nice red dot. Nothing will be as fast to get on-target as shooting with an non-magnified red dot allowing you to keep both eyes open. I recently purchased the Primary Arms Advanced red dot. Like the Aimpoints the battery life is good for 50,000 hours so you can leave it on if you wish.

If you try the red dot at the range, but just can't seem to get enough rounds on paper, pick up a magnified scope as well. Get QD mounts and you can swap between rds and scope in seconds.

Just watched a video and I'm torn. While I'm glad there is an option in the UK for enthusiasts to experience the rifle, (a) it's SACRILEGE and (b) it's robbery to charge that much for the straight pull, non-semi auto "clone" and it's unfortunate to see people paying more for an "almost" M1 than a real one.

Also, the most satisfying part is hearing the ping at the same time as the last round!

BTW, if I'm confusing you with my UK location, I'm stationed out here and so I have an M1 back in the States (favorite rifle; sorely missed!).

red dot and scope both with QD is my current setup. default is red dot and BUIS for HD. so far the red dot holds zero great after taking on and off multiple times. I have to spend more time with the scope to confirm the same.

I do want to try a 1x-4x scope though to see how fast it is at 1x. Not a priority, but curious.

Very cool. I have a CMP Service Grade Special, so pretty much all new parts, HRA receiver, and beautiful CMP stock. While I have an appreciation for the history of the rifle, I wanted it more for the mechanics, so went with something new and didn't care so much about a numbers-correct setup.

Favorite shooting weapon. Now i know why korean vets wanted them instead of m16s in vietnam. Probably as or more effective as they would've gone through the vegetation and not been deflected like a 5.56.

I got a good sized one, might be a tight fit if that's only half of your collection. Here is a quick pic with just a few guns and ammo loaded up to showcase the lighting kit I installed (and removal of long gun door storage rack).

Edit: I'm also going to move it inside the house shortly, I just recently got it and it won't be staying in the garage!

I'm guessing likely based at the 'hall or next door at the 'heath...?

One of our older club members, now in his early 80's, used to have a WW2 dated Garand that he bought in the late 1970's, and it still pains him when he talks about the day in 1988 when he shot it for the last time, before having to hand it to the Police on the day before they were banned as a result of the Hungerford Massacre. Ten years later, he went through the same pain, when having to hand in his 3 x Luger's, P38, and 2 x WW2 dated 1911's on the day before our Govt banned all handgun ownership as a result of the Dunblane Massacre.

So two mental cases with access to firearms they shouldn't have had due to being nuts caused a whole country to ban firearms and make women, elderly, etc. defenseless. Nice one. I live in Orlando, city with highest mass shooting in US history. What we did was have more people than ever applying for carry permits. If a good guy with a gun had been there, probably would have been a different outcome. They also started writing a new law saying if you want to have a gun free zone, then you are responsible for providing security on that zone and liable for any crimes that happen as a result from patrons, etc not being allowed to carry. I.e. if you make me leave my gun in my car when I go to your store and then I get shot, I can sue the perpetrator and the store also.

Not quite, as our UK laws, even before semi-auto rifles and then handguns were banned, never allowed their use for purposes of self defense.
