Maybe a dumb question…
and I’m sure it’s probably been asked before, but why don’t the windows go all the way down when lowering the top? Mine stick above the sill a tiny amount and I can get them to go all the way down by using the window switches.

Never noticed if mine do it or not. Have you tried recalibrating the window travel limits?

Mine go down with the top just as far as they go down with the auto down, but in both case, if I push the down button they will go down about 1/8 inch more.

I have the same. Audi tt too. The first thing that comes to mind is that the protruding glass is a little visible and you do not forget to close it when you leave the car, there are no other ideas 😅

Is this the kind of thing that can be "fixed" using Bimmercode?

In my current M240i convertible, I usually leave a little bit of window up when top down because it substantially reduces wind turbulence in the cockpit. I have to wonder if BMW didn't intentionally make that the default for the Z4.

Maybe I need to try recalibrating mine, as others don't seem to have the issue. GerryC, any idea how to do that?

With the power on and engine off:
Summary version: Without using auto open/close, open all the way. Close all the way then close some more. Open all the way and then open some more. That should have reset the limits.

Adding a datapoint, mine go down all the way when retracting the hood (and all the way up after putting it up).

Mine is the same way. On initial roof down, or one touch window down, they both go down what LOOKS like all the way, except for the vey top of the curve of the glass which is about 1/16 of an inch past the rubber seal. Hit each window switch again, and they go down the last minute amount so the glass is totally below the rubber. I assume this is normal.

So I just tried the window reset thing GerryC mentioned above, but it didn't do anything for me. So weird that some people's go all the way down and others don't. Not really worth the trouble to do any more digging, but was curious. Thanks all!

the BMW engineers figured with the windows up a little there's less wind buffeting at speed

Doing the reset didn't change anything so that tells me that's the set limits. (If the auto up or down ever stops, you can do the reset to get it working again.) I suspect the reason is to provide a bit extra stability to the glass. The frameless windows have very little lateral support and the glass can start rattling - noticeable when closing doors with window down. It was a real issue on the E85. Mine started rattling horribly. My SA got it fixed under warranty by replacing the screws clamping it to the regulator. He said it was the screws working loose. Just tightening them was considered an adjustment and isn't covered under warranty, but replacing the screws is covered.
