Exclamation friend borrowed car and got into an accident. what to do now?

So last night i got a call from my brother and his friend told me to rush to the hospital. It scared the crap out of me in the 30 min drive because my brother was not the one that spoke to me on the phone. All different thoughts and scenarios were going thru my head. I didnt know what to expect. Thank god when i got there, everyone was okay. no scratches, bruises or anything worse. My brother was being looked at by the doctor at the time, so he couldnt talk on the phone.

it turned out my brother's friend was the one driving. They got clipped on the rear end by a limo and hit the median. All the airbags deployed and Car looks totaled from pictures i've seen. where to go from here?

on a lighter note, who knows a dinky little prius is so safe and tough!

since your brother was with him, I doubt anything bad will happen. Also, I think some insurance policies cover close friends/family, but I'm not too sure. Luckily everything was ok

I was pretty much shaking on the drive to the hospital. First thing i saw when i got to the hospital was my brother standing on his feet and smiling and talking to his friend in the hospital. What a sign of relief. Dont know what i would do without this little troublemaker.

Both my brother and his friend pretty much were unable to tell me exactly what happened. My brother was sleeping at the time and his friend said he didnt even know he was hit until he saw all the airbags in front of him. Since my brother and his friend were not able to replicate the accident, police never took the official statement from either of them. My brother did told me the limo drive was issued a ticket in the hospital. Now just gotta wait 5 days for the police report to come out.

when a car is borrowed, insurance always follows the car. not the driver.

Interesting, my insurance in Canada follows me as the driver (meaning I can drive anyones car and my insurance will cover). My coverage is good on my cars as long as the driver is over the age of 25.

Not usually..the insurance CAN make an issue if the driver is not listed on the policy.

Yes. I believe many policies have separate "uninsured driver" maximum allowances. You may want to check yours, but if your brother's friend wasnt at fault it should be mute.

Glad your brother's ok.

as long as a driver is permitted to drive a vehicle, its no issue. if you have one of those online policies, it may be different. cant speak for the cheap folks on this board.

think it may depend on the policy or maybe state laws, iirc some policies will cover guest to drive your car but anyone who lives in your household must be listed in your policy in order to be covered. So as long as your friend doesnt live w/ your brother, should be fine

AFAIK
policies cover only the car and the drivers listed on it.

In Canada we have a thing called "First driver, second driver, third driver".
And a lot of insurances are like "oh? you were second driver? well sucks to be you, we're not covering you"
Happened to a friend.

Not true for all insurance companies here. Some do go by that as my main insurance company that I use does, but I took out a policy under co-operators here in Alberta for that specific reason, that my friend would be driving the vehicle at times, and he or any other one I knew would be covered.

Here is some information right from the Esurance website regarding the "insurance follows the driver" myth:

IIRC, it's car first, then if they deny it, the driver's insurance will be next.

But from the sound it it, this is the limo driver's fault.... so even if you were not insured, you'd be covered
