Adaptive LEDs...
Hello! I have a new 2022 Z4 M40i. Despite the parts shortages, it is supposed to have the Full Adaptive LED headlights. The BMW information for these still indicates that they swivel when taking the car through corners.
Compared to a 2020 M2 that I drove with real swiveling LEDs, the LEDs in my Z4 definitely do not move side to side. I'm trying to figure out what I am missing. Should they be swiveling through turns? Is BMWs website wrong? Is this an undocumented victim of the parts shortages? Can I check anything to verify? Thanks! |

The adaptive LED lights do not swivel on the Z4 unlike other BMW models. They only point straight ahead, but a cornering lamp illuminates under certain conditions to provide similar functionality. I don't remember what they are but in my neighborhood, for instance, when I put a turn signal on under 25mph the relevant cornerning light illuminates.

I notice that they do not swivel unlike my previous E89 35is and M240i which both did, I haven't notice the cornering lights, I need to pay attention tonight.

Agree with Charles. Unlike the former M235 I had, these will at least be compatible for the adaptive function in the US like in Europe.

Thanks for all the input. Good to know I'm not missing a feature, sucks to know that BMW is publishing false information on their website.
For those curious, on the G29 Builder, the LEDs are explained as follows: "Combined with the Adaptive feature, at speeds up to 35 mph the headlights swivel to follow bends in the road based on your steering wheel motion" |

The second tier turns on an additional light when turning. The Z4 comes with the second tier. |

So from the Z4 user manual...
----------------------------------------------------------------------- The adaptive light functions may consist of one system or multiple systems depending on the equipment version: -Cornering light. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Z4 only gets the cornering light. I believe on some other models like the high end X, 5 and 7 they get cornering lights and swivels. I too was a little disappointed when I found this out, but oh well. I can live without it and it's one less thing to break. Last edited by HokieBeemer; 11-19-2021 at 01:14 PM.. Reason: fix typo |

I think the Z4 headlights have excellent coverage and the cornering lights do a convincing job. I had the adaptive lights that swivel on my last two BMWs and don't miss them.

Old thread but all I could find. Picked up my M40 with shadow line package today that includes adaptive headlights. Compared to my Porsche, I thought functionality is similar but see they do not swivel at all. Interestingly I also do not see the additional cornering light come on either....what am I missing?

Yes, it’s my understanding that the lights also come on depending on the angle of the steering wheel. I’ve only driven my car at night once since I’ve gotten it and forgot to pay attention to it, but I believe you’re correct.

Good info, valid for the cornering lights, but some of that doesn't apply to US models due to the "5AP Decoding for no-dazzle high-beam assistance" option on all Z4s and other models with similar headlights. It disables the intelligent anti-glare system, a victim of antiquated US regulations.
Our headlight systems are the same so the feature can be coded back in by someone who knows what they're doing. Some offer a paid service to perform it remotely but it has to be done right or it doesn't work properly. There are some threads on the other forums here where it is discussed. |

The only ‘adaptiveness’ we have in the US are the cornering lights which illuminate at slow speeds while turning (or in reverse - they appear to illuminate both sides), which has been noted up thread.
They fade in and out - this seems to make it difficult to determine that they are working unless you are specifically look for it.

My former CX5 had adaptive swiveling headlights. The Z4 uses those side illumination LED’s
IMO the Z4 lights do a better job (more coverage to left and right thanks to the side LED’s) and don’t miss the swivel lights at all. |
