Odd how the insurance companies that buy the most TV time are the worst service with the highest rates?

It sucks to see so many in this thread with USAA because they might be the worst insurance company that you could possibly have anymore.
When my in-laws home burnt down they were getting screwed by Liberty Mutual, my wife contacted our Erie agent to make sure we had the right coverage. The agent answered a lot of questions on how to better handle their claim (they had no agent). He then called every once and a while to see how it was going with them and if they needed any advice. THAT'S a good agent and company. Also they know how I like my insurance so when I buy a car all it takes is a 1 min call with the VIN and I'm done. State Farm was a nightmare to deal with, even just adding a car.

Back in 2013 the car was worth $28K and now worth about $4-6K. No accidents, ever. And I am using the USAA driver discount app that monitors me even when I fart.

USAA broadened the circle of eligible members from officer to enlisted. This increased a bit the risk profile, but not that much. If you are active duty or civil service, you are more disciplined than an average civilian...and Uncle Sam has you by the balls, so people behave. Then recently they opened up elbiblity to the second uncle's third cousin's neighbor's daughter, which introduced a huge amount of risk profiles...which IMHO contributed vastly to the skyrocketing rates.

I called USAA why the skyrocketing rates, and they said my ZIP code, but would not elaborate. My area near DC has been populated by the 2008-2016 White House admin with uninsured motorists, foreign drivers that got their home country permits under the table so they never learned to drive, etc. The traffic now reminds me of Manila or Riyadh, third world chaos and undiscipline rules.

That a-hole running USAA is a pinhead clerk who rose in the ranks of USAA. The first ever non-military. He ruined (allowed to ruin) the one of a kind customer service climate USAA was so well known for. I found my mortgage in 2015 near 3/4% lower than USAA from another company, so said screw USAA. My USAA home insurance went up from $200/year to [...]
As I understand it they're all segregated in different pools. Servicemen separate from their dependents who later on carry coverage.

I gave up USAA years ago

Have you seen lately what small damage is deemed a total loss accident by an insurance company? WTF is going on...?

Sometime take a look at some of the sites that sell rebuildable wrecks. I'm constantly amazed how little damage constitutes a total.

I do the same but from other sources. My next daily/beater may be from there.

Agreed! It would be very interesting to know what has changed recently regarding how they determine a total loss.

Just switched our home and auto. I went out and got about 8 different quotes. All ranging from $1k for 1 year to over $2500 for 1 year for two vehicles. That was comparing apples to apples as best I could. Was able to get my auto insurance down a fraction of what I was paying with the old company and saved a few hundred in my home insurance as well. I will revisit in 6 months - 1 year and see how things are looking.

Freakin crazy the difference.

No. A supervisor was supposed to call me Thursday or Friday, but nothing. And quite frankly I’ve been too pissed this week to try to deal with them again.

I'd imagine the post-COVID forces are at play until things settle back down fully.

Just a few things that come to mind:
  • You have part shortages that extend the time cars are in the repair shop. Increasing losses on rentals for policy holders.
  • Part shortages can increase the salvage value of the vehicle as parts can be resold.
  • Labor rates have increased pushing up the cost to repair any damage.
  • Insurers guarantee repairs for a lifetime.

I had a single vehicle crash years ago in my C300 that ended up with the car being totaled. It had a lot of damage. This was pre-COVID as well. The insurer paid me more than I paid for the car and I was like "wow they must have lost out" until I pulled up the car sale price at salvage auction. It sold for only a couple grand less than the insurance company paid me. Obviously, I don't know all the costs they incurred, but a <$2K "loss" would a wise way to keep losses down compared to repairing the car and anytime I had an issue they'd be on the hook for a repair...

I plan on revisiting all of this in about 6 month - 1 year. The wife and I have a clean driving record, so it was pretty much sticker shock when I was reviewing some of these auto quotes.

Back when nobody could touch USAA’s customer satisfaction AMICA was the closest just about any other company came. But I never have gotten a particularly affordable quote from them when I have checked.

Encova and National General. I’m not familiar with them. How were their quotes? I haven’t checked Travelers in a while. Navy Federal keeps telling me I should check with Liberty Mutual, but I had a less than satisfying experience with them a few years ago and I’m not very inclined to consider them.

Generally the more an insurance company advertises the worse their claim service is.

It’s really so sad, looking at the comments of others because we are getting ridiculous prices from this insurance company. Things are really getting out of hand..
