I wouldn’t even mind these being the production ones. You do have to see something in them after all, which isn’t the case with the miniscule concept mirrors. I’d say this test vehicle looks promising, other than the lack of round exhaust pipes, something that can luckily be fixed.

Looks promising to me. A Z4 M Coupe with the new S58 would be a dream car. I'll keep dreaming

Are you referring to the overall shape? I would say yes, but the pattern does look similar to the concept car.

dont get your hopes up people. iv seen the production version. it looks nothing like the concept. Also BMW didnt even bother to make new unique side mirrors for the new z4, its same mirrors from the X1. In the Past the z4 had its own mirror design.

It's not the same mirror.

Close but no cigar.

so what is pricing supposed to be on this? back to soft top, is it going to be in line with a 3 series again?

Z4 M40i with 355 horsepower (what X3 has) would be pretty awesome.

looked up 2006 road test from CD on Z4M roadster, 330 hp 262 torque and 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, throw on 25 more HP and 100 more torque if the weight is even similar, this will be a fun car.
BMW claims the heavy X3 is 4.6 seconds (granted thats with AWD).

Merc SLC43 starts just above $60K, has to be competitive with that

Interesting comment, since the first dual headlight BMW was the 320i in 1975. For exceptions since then, check the 8-series, Z1, and Z8.
I understand your comment but how many people were around prior to 1975 purchasing these cars which was 30+ year old individuals who were affluent and successful. The BMW oo=00=oo is what almost everyone on this board knows of. Yes one limited production car z8 which only a very small few could buy had single head lamps. A z4 is obtainable by most bmw buyers so a change from tradition of 42 years is an understandable comment. The fact that this is a cross developed platform with a different company as well as removing an iconic item such as the dual ringed headlights is unsettling.

Z4 pricing was NEVER inline with the 3 series. Z3 pricing were more inline with the E36 of the day, but the original soft-top E85 Z4 was easily $5,000-8,000 more than the equivalent E46 and E92 base model counterparts.

Sorry - lost my head. I'm 70 years old and my first BMW was a brand new 1977 320i (first year of US spec car) and was 30 years old. It was available in Europe as a 315i and 316i that had single headlights.

It wasn't even in line with E36. My 1997 Z3 2.8 was over $5,000 more than a 1997 328 equally equipped. My 2001 Z3 3.0i at $41,000 was about $7,000 more than a similarly equipped 330i.

It can never be a full BMW as under the skin it's a Toyota and BMW cannot even allow it to be assembled by BMW. Its a transvestite of a BMW/Toyota.
When will "spy photos" get dropped from headline news as these photos were taken on public roads.
I will never buy a BMW vehicle designed and produced by a non BMW owned factory.

Agree, and I certainly hope they don't turn it into a slab-sided car like the current 7er is. The best part about the profile of the concept Z is that large scooping feature on side. I wonder if they'll ever offer a PHEV version of it, that's something I'd be interested in.

I thought of it more as a fancy Toyota Supra. Which was suppose to look like the FT-1 concept!!!

Depending how close z4 concept is close to production I would be interested

Good thing you weren't around when BMW started building cars, since they were building Austins rebadged as Dixis. Or when they were building Italian Isos rebadged as Isettas.

Meh is right even if it magically had a hardtop. I don't see this warranting all the hoopla and wait. Just another regular model.

Btw, the existing Z4 already paid homage to the 507. I dunno what this one's doing.

Maybe I am thinking Z4M vs M3 because i thought M3 was always a few thousand more in US

The testing units are way too big for the car IMO. The ones on the E89 are nicely shaped and size appropriate.

The Mirrors on my old 08 1er Vert had mirrors like those.

They were great looking but were hard to see out of.

I've been searching online (without luck) for body dimensions, esp. length.

Wishing for something sized midway between a Miata and a Cayman, but betting it'll be too big to get my attention.
