And supposedly improved shifting as well. Between that and the steering / suspension tweaks I could hardly ask for more.
I dreamed that a manual Z4 might be different in more ways than just the transmission, that folks rowing their own gears would want those other things (i.e. actual steering feedback) and BMW might just revise them as well. I'm thrilled that seems to be the case. Last edited by tracer bullet; 12-11-2023 at 02:34 PM.. |

This makes me very excited. I've been worried that when my 1er finally dies, there was no manual 'vert option out there that i could replace it with for daily driving. I just built one online (pre-manual), and it's $30k+ cheaper than a comparable boxster. I am so glad they mated it with the correct engine too. Last couple of manuals seemed to be tied to the 4cyl.
With rumors of the 911 losing the manual at the .2 'upgrade' and the boxster going electric, this might be the only manual convertible at any price point. Thank you, BMW!!! Is the Z4 still expected to run through Mar '26 and is the expectation the manual will carry through for the remainder of production? Last edited by Josh-PA; 12-11-2023 at 12:22 PM.. |

This is great news and I am very actively considering! But TBH I would rather have the 30i 4cyl with the MT. That's all the motor I need and a little reduced weight wouldn't hurt either. Would be fantastic if that was an option as well... Fingers crossed!

The B58 engine is perfectly paired with this 6MT model. The price is significantly less expensive than a Porsche and IMHO the car is more reliable. Just buy one while you can and own a true Unicorn in the Wild! |

The Z4 is in it’s best market position since release IMO. No more Audi TT or F-Type sharing the same luxury roadster air. Porsche costs much more $$ and not as well appointed interior.
For about 70k, it undercuts the vette and gives manual fans something the pricier vette cannot offer. It’s in a spot that is ripe for good Z4 sales considering is lower production volume. Maybe I’m full of crap, but don’t be surprised if the Z4 sells better in the USA in its final production years then it did early on. |

I hope it is not much more expensive than the G87 M2. Otherwise it might be a tough sell, because it is not a real M car.

Wish they'd do a hardtop version of this car. Or at least make a bolt-on hardtop.

I don't disagree, but I think it's kind of a different audience. There will be cross shopping of the two, but somehow I think anyone doing so already knows which car they'd prefer.

Agree, different audience for sure. If you desire a vert the M2 is out, if you don’t care for a vert and need extra seats Z4 is out.

That’s great news - a MT Z4 with a B58 engine sounds like an enticing convertible sports car

I wonder if the shift linkage will be the same as the Supra as Toyota massaged that for better feel compared to the typical BMW rubbery throws.

Most of the articles linked in the original post above state that the shift linkage tuning and bushings are different (and better) than the Supra as well as the M2/3/4.

"The transmission is the same one used in the Supra, with uniquely tuned linkages and bushings to arrive at that trademark BMW shift feel, which is somehow simultaneously aloof and precise. You never miss a shift, nor do you worry about a sting of vibration making its way from the six-speed's innards up to your hand."MOTORTREND "The shifter itself is a big step up from the same mechanical ZF unit found in the Toyota Supra. Indeed, BMW says the Z4 manual's shift linkage is physically different than the Supra's, and it sure feels that way. The shifts are crisper, more mechanical, less rubbery, more satisfying. You know what else? The Z4's transmission feels better than the M2's six-speed. Same for the row-your-own M3. Along with the other changes BMW implemented, the sporty factor has increased noticeably. As athletic as a Porsche Boxster? No, but name a competitor's car that is. The 2024 BMW Z4 is in a much better place performance-wise than it was. That's a good thing."BMWBLOG "During my ride with the 2024 BMW Z4 M40i, Nick Gerstner, Product Manager of BMW Z4, tells me that the transmission was engineered specifically for this new Z4. It starts with the shift linkage which is different than the Supra’s. It also has a shorter gear lever and a completely different shifting behavior than all of the 6-speed manuals offered today in other BMW products. Plenty of new and old M2/M3/M4 customers complained about the somewhat vague and rubbery shifter in their cars. The first to second gears of the BMW six-speed are always twitchy, with long throws, making it a bit difficult to have a clean shift. |
