Got launch control to work. But it probably worked before. Never looked in display. I thought it would be just like My Z4 35is. With that car (DCT) the Transmission disengaged and engine hit 4000 rpm then when you let off brake pow. This is way different. Like trying to powerbrake without spinning wheels. Not a fan

I cannot for the life of me do launch control.
Sport + left shift off breaks and gas. As soon as I pass 2000 rpm I do a burnout and flag does not display.
I tried about 20 times.

Have to press the traction button once or twice and then it should allow launch control. Do that in conjunction with the shifter and sport+

Don't want their system logging LC starts before the service.

BMW uses confusing nomenclature. I'm guessing it is for marketing reasons.

Below is a description of the various "M" variants from BMW taken from BMW Markham's web page.
BMW M Sport

The lowest rung in the BMW M ladder is M Sport. Unlike M Performance or M, which are unique vehicle variants, ‘M Sport’ is actually an accessory package that can be added to almost any BMW. Even luxury models like the 7-Series, 8-Series, and X7 can all be ordered with the M Sport package. What is in the M Sport package can differ from vehicle to vehicle. However, at the bare minimum, it adds unique exterior and interior touches. This includes a few small M badges, darker exterior, and interior trim, larger wheels, a sportier-looking body kit, and a special steering wheel. Some BMWs, though, get even more.

The BMW M Performance

One step above M Sport is M Performance. An easy way to distinguish between the two is by the badge on the trunk. A 340i with the M Sport package, for instance, will just say ‘340i’; the M Performance version, the BMW M340i, though will actually say ‘M340i.’ And while M Sport is mostly about looks, M Performance adds genuine speed. Sticking with the 3-Series, the M340i gets a different engine than the standard car. The standard 3-Series engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, making 255 hp. The M340i, though, has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder, making 382 hp. Although it no longer has a manual, the M Performance version does get M Sport brakes, M Sport exhaust, larger wheels and sportier tires, additional selectable driving modes, and a standard electronically-controlled locking rear differential.

The BMW M

The M Performance cars may be the fastest and most-powerful trims available, but BMW officially considers its M products as separate models, due to the extent of the performance modifications. That’s why official M vehicles don’t have trim designations, e.g. the M3 and the X6 M are just badged ‘M3’ and ‘X6 M’. And where M Performance cars are mostly intended for street-driving, every BMW M SUV and car is designed with track racing in mind. BMW offers every X5 M and X6 M buyer training at one of its M driving schools. Which, considering what the M models receive, is likely very necessary. The most obvious is even more power. The standard BMW M3 uses the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder as the M340i, only in the M3, it makes 425 hp. The M3 Competition boosts that even further, to 444 hp. The upcoming 2021 M3 could offer as much as 510 hp. But the M-specific modifications go further than that.

Its a bunch of fluid & filter changes they do on the M series. Also said to unlock LC. Not sure if thats real. On my 2011 335is DCT LC unlocked itself at 1200 miles.

Notice has already come up on my panel.

I could be wrong, but the quote is talking about 2 different cars: the Z4 and the M4C.

It confused me, because I have no real idea what BMW makes beyond the Z4. As such, looking it up, M4C refers to possibly the M4 Coupe or Competition (?) which is what (I guess) people refer to as a 'true M car'?

Sorry about the confusion. Z4 M40i is an M-Performance car & does not have this requirement.

The M4C is an M4 Competition car, signature picture, & does have the 1200 mile service requirement.

FWIW the Dragy time I listed for my Z4 is not in LC. Have used LC but not with Dragy

Not for the G29. The Service Manual will describe the maintenance cycles.

Not a fan of launch control

After having this car a while my 2cents: On this car it is just not needed as it is a rocket and dont want to wear on the transmission (that said 90% of the time i am in sport+ mode). I also have it on my 2nd gen NSX and it makes me cringe on that car. It is supposedly "mild launch control" on the NSX as it only revs to 2K before launch and combined with the electric motors the torque is too much. Car hits so hard on launch it is scary and you feel like something bad is going to happen. On these fast cars its not really needed and on the cars that need it, no such capability is available.

Thanks for this post - was wondering if the M40i had launch control... I am still getting through the first 1200 miles - why such a long break-in? - so hard to keep my foot off the throttle...

Its just a smart thing to do even if its a pain in the ass. The engine is not the only thing getting broken in even though most people think that what its all about.

Every moving part down to the tires (200 mi or so) has its specific break-in period. The transmission in these cars is very complex & just adds to the issue.

Little extra push on the throttle as the mileage get up there is not going to kill anything but its still a good plan to stay out of WOT, LC & kick-down till the clock says it midnight.

Just went through it with the M4C & its getting to Dragy time when the streets warm up. They have a strict 1200 deal on the M cars where you have to go in for fluids change & inspection at 1200 miles or they can bust you on your warranty (so I am told) if you have a failure later on.
