Digital key question for those that picked up their car recently

My car was one of the ones that was affected by the recall for the digital key earlier this year. At one point (while the car was at the port in Germany and in-transit) it was showing up as an open recall. Once it got to the US port, the recall no longer showed as open (and still doesn't).

I was assuming they did the update while the car was at the VC in Baltimore and closed out the recall. However, I went to try and finally set up the key today and noticed it's not showing up as an option in the My BMW app.

Can someone else who got their car recently let me know if they have the same issue? Figured I'd start here before I check with the dealer.

My '22 s30i was originally part of the recall but now it doesn't show up on NHTSA's recall list. I haven't taken it in or done anything that may have updated it. I took delivery last summer and activated the digital key shortly afterwards. It still functions normally so I'm somewhat confused on the issue. FWIW, it shows up on the BMW app on the main page scrolled down as shown here:

Thanks for posting this. I'm wondering if your's is ok because you set it up before the recall was issued.

I don't have that option in the app. I checked with my wife and it shows for her X3, so it's clearly something with my car. Hoping one of the others who took delivery recently can confirm.

I picked up my car on 6/1 and was able to download my digital key to Apple Wallet at that time.

I called the dealer and they had a form that mentioned it hadn’t been done yet.

I picked up my car on 6/3 and found the letter in the glove box that I needed to get the software update. I did that at the dealer on 6/12 and while the digital key card works now, the digital key on MyBMW app on my iPhone still did not appear.
I called BMW Genius to log a ticket but haven’t heard back from them. And lo and behold this morning I saw the option for setting my digital key on the app. Unfortunately I’m out of town so will have to try the set up when I return.
I’m not sure if it took a while for the app to recognize the update or if BMW Genius did anything.

Thank you. Now that I talked to the dealer, I vaguely remember them mentioning that form when I picked it up, and they confirmed it today. Sounds like I just need to go get the software update done.

Must say I didn’t think I’d use but the digital key is my first time I’ve bothered to use it and it’s very good! I can move all the cars around just using my phone 👌🏻

Update: Returned back last night and tried to set up the digital key on my iPhone. Multiple attempts failed with the error message:

Preparation Status Error
Digital Key service unavailable during vehicle set up. Please try again later.

Hint: Make sure you have a stable, strong internet connection

I've tried rebooting iDrive and also reinstalling MyBMW app with no success.

Admittedly, this has been a less than ideal experience and BMW dealer has not been much help. One told my car didn't have the capability (which is not true).

That’s super annoying. I don’t know when I’ll be able to make it in to get mine updated, but I’ll report back if I have any issues.

That's sad to hear. I'd be making a call to someone up the chain if the dealership was unable or unwilling to assist. After all, it is an installed feature on a vehicle under their warranty.

In the MYBMW app does it have a section toward the bottom that says 'Set up Digital Key'?

Yes it does. I’ve tried both options in the app as well as directly in the settings in the car.

Yup - did all that. Even removed the phone (iPhone 14 Pro Max running latest OS) itself in iDrive and readded. Still the same issue.

OK, now try resetting your Head Unit. It's a 2 button operation but I can't remember the sequence. Should be able to Google it. May fix it but won't break anything.

Just picked up my car 2 days ago. I don't have it as it's at the PPF installer, but got a link to my garage and when I accepted it says it's ready for digital key activation.

I had the same problem. I picked up my car on 4/17, so the key was disabled when I took delivery. After having the dealer perform the update, I opened a case with the BMW assist group. They enabled the ability in the app to setup the key like yours is showing, but I kept getting the setup error like yours. The fix for me was to go to the mybmw site, and delete your car from there. I got a few warnings about not doing this if I still owned the car. I proceed and then re-added the car back. After which, I could setup the key.

Doing so starting the Digital Key activation. Not sure if this was due to the digital key being enabled at a later date or not.

Had same issue with our X5. The email link was the only method that worked. The other methods failed with a "could not download to wallet." I did notice the link in the email specifically targeted Apple wallet.

The Genius installed the key to my Z4 when we picked it up at the Performance Center. I'm not sure what he did. He poked a few things in the iDrive and told me to place the phone on the NFT pad. The key then downloaded. It took less than a minute.

Digital Key Setup Error

Making progress but this is not working yet. I have a KeyCard after dealer installed update. That opens the lock. I followed the process in My BMW app on iPhone but when I tap Start setting up digital key in the MyBMW app, I get the following error message and can’t complete the setup. I have strong internet connection and Bluetooth turned off on the iPhone. I was outside on the driveway doing this. Before trying all this I performed the reboot , wait 30 minutes and update of services as instructed. I deleted and reinstalled the My BMW app on my iPhone 13. I had both sets of keys in the car. I don’t know where to go next.

Please help me get this service setup.
