2006 330i U.S. top speed limiter

"Our Euro-spec test car ran a bit beyond its 155-mph governor. U.S.-bound cars will be limited to 130 with the standard suspension and 150 mph with the Sport package." <------- from http://www.caranddriver.com ( http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtest...30i-page2.html )

Is that true? none Sport package has 130 mph limiter on it? VS 150mph with the Sport package?

It's a function of the tires they install. All-seasons get the 130mph and summer performance tires get the 150. If you buy an xi, and get the upgraded tires, you can have them up the speed limiter.

As to going faster, indicated speeds will always be a bit high. I would bet the "real" speed (used as input to the odometer and nav system) would be at the maximum allowed per the documentation.

I just ordered by 330i with Sport Package and on the actual order printout, it shows the details of ZSP and says "840 Unlimited top speed". I asked the dealer and he said now they remove the limiter when you get the ZSP.

Does the dealer just flash the ecu? How does that work?

What If I have a 325i (came with the governor) and install Z rated tires down the road, would they peform this flash for me? or is it too much of a liability for them?

This is the correct figure for US bound ZSP cars. ^^

Trus! I find it hard to do that anyway. I think the risk of going that fast is not enough to end a career. The military don't like it when you are in jail and have to explain why you were doing 155mph and risking the lives of others. They see it as a poor example of leadership and will probably kick you out of service. Germany is probably my best hope or a race track.

My 330i SP was built last November. I just pulled out one of the many vehicle inquiry reports from my dealer. It has the '840' Unlimited Top Speed.

That's what the option is called. It is governed at 155 though.

It would be awesome if that was true. "D00d! I went 856 mph, and there was plenty more!"

That's what its called yes, but its a bad translation for "top speed is not restricted". There were several posters here and on Bimmerfest that actually took a picture of their speedometer during European delivery and it showed in excess of 160 mph! Another poster here said he has hit 160 on the NJ Garden State Parkway, so I believe that the governor is removed with the Sports package. I also don't think BMW likes to publicize this feature very much.

Well, given that I live in the US, 155 might as well be "unlimited" since I'll never see it :-)

Here's the official product brochure for the e90. I circled the part that's relevent. Also, the indicated 155mph can be exceeded, but it will only go 155 actual, as delivered.

Rich
There is a limiter at 155 in US cars just as Ini shows. Been there a few times now and the tach has a ton left at that speed. On a nice and level stretch of autobahn the car was around 5/k on the tach in 6th gear at the limiter. So if you put on higher rated tires and can find a way to truely remove the limiter, the car will easily do much more than 160.

I wonder if someone can find out from a dealer to up the limiter @155 mph. That is after you upgrade your tires to the speed specs.
