Upgraded to a Nikon D700

Pickup a D700 Nikon this afternoon. Took another photo of the Brisbane River only it was a little later on in the evening as to when I took the photo with the D300.

The lens I used was a 14-24mm f2.8 set at 24mm, iso 3200. The D700 is also a full frame camera (FX) unlike my D300 (DX), and I used a 18-70mm f4 lens set at around 50mm for the first photo.

Big difference in noise. D700 is such a sweet camera, have fun with it.

iso's were the same I only changed the d700 to f11, the d300 f/stop was on auto.

Took quite a few photo's and generally the d700 had less noise. If you play with d300 setting you can remove a fair bit of it but with the d700 full frame sensor the noise is definitely less in in low light.

Nice camera. I've been thinking of picking up one of these. I'm looking for something that can produce 36-48" prints, so I'm thinking I need to wait for one with more pixels.

The D700 is very nice but too much for me. I'm thinking about moving to the D300 from my D80.

Keen to hear your comparisons (if you do one) between the D300 and D700, and an exit-review of the D300 (nudge, nudge)

eh, I've waaaay too much money invested in glass to change platforms. I'm optimistic for the near future, seeing what Nikon has brought out lately.

nice pics. What lens did you use on the D700? Looks like the lens was faster too.

The high ISO caused the graininess on the D300; I suspect the majority of the difference between photos was due to the difference in lens and F stop settings.

The D700 is a great camera.

You should look into DxO's Optic Pro image processing software to correct for that perspective distortion in you sample photos. The software adjusts for errors introduced by your specific camera body and the specific lens you're using at the specific apertures. Check it out at www.dxo.com

I'm using it with my Canon 5D MkII and L-series lenses. It is simply amazing and very easy to use. You can download a trial at the site. I guarantee that you'll pay to keep it. (You can still Photoshop after the initial DxO adjustment.

Thanks for the info, I will try it out. The settings from the d300 to the d700 give different outcomes, so I need to get use to the d700. The full frame of the d700 threw me a little, so I need to take a couple hundred more shots to get the correct setting programed into the camera!

That's always a curiousity to me. My first camera was a pin-hole camera, then a 44x44mm format camera (TLR), then a 35mm SLR, then a compact digital and finally the 5D MkII (back to full-frame). I don't even notice the perspective difference and don't change the way that I compose the picture from camera to camera.

I've read that you can use lenses designed for APS sensors on full-frame sensors, but then what you see in the viewfinder is not what you get in the image. I suppose that would be problematic. I'm using lenses designed for full-frame cameras. I highly recommend that, because you see what you get AND you use all the available pixels and gain ALL the advantages that your camera was designed to deliver.

Yeh, thats what I eventually went and did, bought 3 new lenses from 14mm all the way up to 300mm. But the if you set the d300 to the same setting as the d700 you get two different shots, its strange!

Too bad you weren't able to take both pictures with matching EXIF settings. The sky in the D300's photo takes away from additional clarity. In all, this mainly shows just how much better the D700's high ISO performance is. I am hopeful that a "D400" can have similar ISO performance when it comes.
