Breakin period, RPM max?

I read about the recommended break in for the various components in our new toy, AFTER my wife and I both gunned it a couple of times to around 6,000 RPM's with 100 miles on the odomometer. Being that the engine, clutch, and transmission are not broken in until 300 to 1,200 miles, what is the problem with going over the 4,500 RPM recommendation? Do we screw anything up? Car runs fine.

Baby's first outing in the hill country.

When I picked up my car, I asked my BMW Genius if I needed a break in and he said no. So I had a few revs on the way home.

Then I read the manual!

(Actually, I'm not that concerned. Cars are always test driven with low milage, and I'm sure most performance cars hit high revs by shoppers with very low miles. Dealers don't seem too concerned.)

While I agree with you about the cars on the lot, those specifically ordered will not have those "fun" test drives.

Be that as it may, it is always prudent to follow the break-in procedures for the first 1000 miles. This helps the piston rings and cylinders wear in and will extend the back end longevity of the car. As far as a little hi revving during the break-in period, it is expected in today's driving and you should have nothing to worry about.

I'm in agreement with the other posters ...it's doubtful that you have anything to worry about.

Speaking of pictures...where is yours CJ? I would like to see it. Based on your car description, we may have the same builds

I wish I had some. Still waiting, it was produced in the first week of April so I hope any day now. Did you get the alcantara interior as well? I have yet to see photos of it beyond BMW's configurator.

I follow the manufactures recommendations. They want to keep warranty claims down so it makes sense they know a good plan.

Lot of stuff is being broken in down to the tires & brakes. Best plan IMHO is stay out of WOT & stay under 4000.

An occasional run over 4000 is not a big deal but constant runs are. Its also a good plane to vary RPM as much as possible especially if you are bringing the car home from PCD.

FWIW back in ancient times I picked up a 2011 335is coupe 7DCT at PCD. The cars software automatically locked out the 370ftlb of temporary torque boost till 1200 miles. Torque was limited to a standard engines level about 320ftlbs.

I can empathize. I got the frozen gray with alcantara and exec pckg with the by-color 19-in wheels and shadowline.

I'm waiting on exterior body assy which I believe will start either today or tomorrow.

The manufacturer (BMW ICE engineers) says to keep it below 4500 rpm for 1200 miles. Why does everybody think they know better?!

The new Corvette's tach displays redline at 4000 until you've passed 500 miles then it switches to 6500 rpm redline. Total break-in is 1500 miles. Oil should be checked every fill-up as consumption is potentially greater during the break-in for the Corvette.

I dunno.. dealer also told me that it was 1500 for M models. Mine isn’t the M40…. Might be the difference.

I've followed break-in procedures on every new vehicle and have never had a powertrain issue. I especially did this with the 350Z and it lasted 12 trouble free years.

I will not tell anybody what to do with their property; I'm just sharing my personnel advice.

Yep.

Folks, it's not like we make a habit of "abusing" the car. It's only been on a rare occasion that I looked down and the rpm's quickly ramped up after gunning it.

I'll be good, I promise.

Now, after the break-in, stay below the redline.
