Seat Belt Position

Hi,

I'm finding that, with an otherwise comfortable driving position, the seatbelt rubs against my neck. Oddly, when I test drove a 2023 pre-owned, I did not have that problem, with what I thought was a similar seat position--it's as if the seatbelt guide on that car held the belt down closer to the seat and further to the left.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to alleviate that other than setting the seat higher? (I'm 6 ft tall, but long waisted, so I need to adjust the seat height as if I were a couple of inches taller.)

I'm at least glad to see that the G29 doesn't have the issue my M240i had--where the seatbelt would flutter in the wind and constantly flap against my shoulder unless I put the window up a few inches.)

I normally wear t-shirts during the day and have had the same issue since day one. I found that wearing collared shirts works for me as the seatbelt doesn't rub against my skin.

I usually do wear collared shirts. It helps some, but I have to keep adjusting my collar to trap the seat belt.

Agree, that is my only complaint about the car. Not important enough to do anything about it though. I am interested in hearing any suggestions.

There are seat belt adjusters sold which claim to alleviate this neck rubbing issue. I purchased this adjuster but after speaking to my SA at the dealer I stopped using it because he reminded me that there are no safety standards for these after-market or "add-on" belt adjusters.

Yeah, I don't love the idea of aftermarket attachments. I'm just trying to figure out why it was so different in the test drive car. That car actually had an excellent seat belt position. Maybe the previous owner modded something.

Maybe it was the position of the seat, have you tried playing with this?

Yeah, I've got the same issue being over 6' and long waisted. I find it mildly annoying since I mostly wear T-shirts. I have a friend who has seat belt pads in his SLK for the same reason. They seem to work well enough. I've been looking around to find some that a) work, b) look reasonable, and c) don't cost a fortune (and aren't shoddy garbage.)

I found these that came with a recommendation from a Jalopnik writer.

The link is to ECS as they have a pic, but it's available from several other BMW parts dealers. I'm not quite ready to part with that much cash, but I'm not too fond of the cheap stuff on Etsy or AliExpress either.

Wear a lot of Tee shirts. Just pull the collar up under the belt. My 1998 FORD Pickup truck has an adjustable upper belt guide that works great.

BMW should have placed the upper mount on the rear bulkhead & made it adjustable.

Built these to fit me but would have used the FORD sliders if a number of people were going to drive the car.

The problem with most seatbelt pads is that they are unattractive and bulky looking.

I put the seat belt under my arm pit when it gets too annoying. This may not work for you. I am now 5'6" and have no neck. I used to be 5'11". You shrink as you get old, but this is ridiculous!

Amazon has seat belt extenders that only add about 4 or 5", just enough to make it easier to buckle the belt. But, that does move the position of shoulder belt to the left enough to make a difference.

That also describes me. Though at my age I've reached the point where I don't really care.

The extender may be a good idea, but putting the shoulder strap under your arm is extremely dangerous. The ribs aren't capable of handling the load applied that way. You can end up with broken ribs and internal injuries very easily.
