What about the unlock feature as you approach the car? Does it require the key fob or do the phone/card provide the unlock feature?

The key card and phones use NFC (Near Field Communication) which only works within an inch or so. You must put them up to the door handle to unlock the car. To start the car, they must be in the smartphone tray.

Thanks Charles,

It sounds like keeping the key fob in your pocket is the way to go.

I have seen a NFC black key card in a previous post. Mine is different, it's white, maybe a different car?

I don't keep the fobs in my pocket while at home any more. I've had all the windows and sunroof open on my M340I because the open button gets pushed while it is in my pocket. When I had an X3, I came out from a pub and the rear hatch was wide open. If it was raining, it would be a disaster for the M340I. At least the Z4 soft top seems to require you to be standing by the car. But, I don't take any chances.

With the new app, none of my cars support digital key on my S21+ phone. Maybe I should start using the cards....

Well that’s bad.... I’ve also read in other threads where storing the key fob too close to the car in your garage can drain the battery. It sounds like there are some usability corner cases to be aware of.

Thanks for the heads up!

That was my doing. Not having gotten the key card with my Z4, I didn't know if it was black or white. So I just randomly picked an image of one.

Interesting, it could be the different models get different colors. Charles, you have an M40, is yours black?

Yes, that is curious. I will have the comfort access in my 3.0i, so I wonder if I'll get the same card and what it would look like by comparison.

Anyone here get one for their 3.0i?

Mine is a 30i with M sport package, comfort access, M white card, etc.

OH EXCELLENT! That's good to know. I also have the M Sport Package on my 3.0i coming so ... I'll be sure to look out for it. Thank you for your input!

I got an M40 coming in so I will advise if there is none sooner when, or if, it arrives.

Thank you sir. It appears that the card is white for the S30 and black for the M40.

I've always had a little bit of heartache getting ///M logo stuff when I don't have the M badge on the back. I dunno.. i get it.. M sports package, varying degree of M influence blah blah blah, but it just doesn't feel right lol!

That's why I'm even hesitant to buy stuff like cups or hats that have the M logo on it cause ... can it really be considered anything close to an M? eeehhhhhhh I guess it's like a Stage 1 Roush. M badges are all over my car, but i dunnot if I actually want to get them anywhere else. I feel like I'd earn scorn amongst the rest of the M community. (for instance i'd love to get ///M badges for the brake vents like they do in Europe)

During the airbag recall; they gave me an ///M badged thumb drive.

It's all marketing and their thing. Let 'em go.

I leave my FOB in the car all of the time as she's garage parked. It's been a year and I've had zero issue with battery drain on my M340i.
