Ginger Needs New Shoes
"So Ginger, are you getting excited about the trip I'm planning?", I asked.
"You haven't told me about it yet. You're so forgetful", Ginger scolded. "Well, we're going on a little mountain driving excursion", I replied. "Like what we did last month in the Smokies?", Ginger asked expectantly. "No Ginger. Real mountains - the Rocky Mountains!", I excitedly said. "Oh, I love the Rockies. And they're so beautiful lit up by the summer sun", cooed Ginger. "Well, no summer sun. We'll be traveling in September - after Labor Day. It will be..." Ginger interrupted. "What? After Labor Day! I'll need new shoes! I can't wear these summer things out west in the Rockies. It gets COLD out there - even in September. I could get away with wearing these old things in Miami after Labor Day, but not out there!", she cried. "Hmmm.", I pondered. "I hadn't thought about that. Snow - sure I looked into the chances of that, but cold? Is that really a problem with your summer shoes?", I asked. "Of course it is.", Ginger replied. "The cold will turn them into hockey pucks and possibly crack them. If you really want to drive 10 -14,000 foot mountain passes and not go over the side of a switchback, you'll get me some new shoes. Something in black that I can wear in all seasons.". "Well, we're in luck, Ginger!", I said. "Tire Rack has these nice Michelin Pilot Sport All Season shoes in just your size. With a rebate to boot! I just have to ask though, if I get these for you are you going to act like a minivan?" The foregoing conversation may or may not have occurred with my red 30i named Ginger, but the tires are ordered and will be installed in September. Colorado in September can be cold but Yellowstone can see snow and Montana - God only knows. I'll be constantly watching the 10 day forecasts! Happy that I'll have some all-season compound keeping the tires functional although the new "shoes" won't make me legally compliant in Colorado. After September 1st you're supposed to have 4-wheel drive or M&S rated tires to drive the roads I'm looking at. How do you Coloradoans live there - shees, September! I know, skiing. But September!!!! |

Given that I live in the Colorado mountains, I'm going to have to give Zelda new shoes by October (I think Ginger is too pessimistic about September).

I'm starting to think, with all these TV show and game references, we are starting to show our age.....I mean wisdom.

Don't Cheap out on tires. I bought Federals Evolution St1 summer tires as a Replacement in Feburary. Car only a year old but with Burnouts and a front blowout i had no choice. While they seemed ok in the cold months, now that summers here there not so good! So i just spent $1300 on new rubber. Oem Pilot Super Sports. I wanted to try the new Pilot Sport 4s but they where on backorder. I gave up on all seasons in winter. To much of a hassle, unless you buy new rims, tires and sensors (which i did with my last Z4). I just drive slow in comfort mode on cold days.

New Tires Installed
Can you pick out the OEM and my replacement? They look pretty good and the ride so far has been excellent. I think the replacements might soak up the bumps a little more than the OEM tires. Haven't put many miles on them so far so we'll see.
The fronts are warranted for 45,000 miles and the rears at half that as they can't be rotated to the front. Hopefully they'll last me through my lease and I can decide at lease end whether to put the OEM's back on or not. I was going to mention lining up the M badge and the BMW center cap but let it alone. They lined them all up pretty nicely without me asking but the M badge is upside down when reading BMW. I would have put the M badge under the BMW so they both would be upright. Oh well, got to give them credit for effort! |
