2000 Nissan Maxima with 240k miles. Bought it in 2000 used. If we were to trade it in we would only get, maybe $3,000 so might as well keep it.
Its going to get passed to my son in about 3 months. So the garage queen 335i is going to come out more.

I think my Saab 9-3 wagon is morphing into one. I have had it more than 8 years, it's a 10 year old car and it's been good to the family. The X3 now does family duties but the Saab handles my commute and Home Depot runs.

I plan on getting a midlife crisis car soon, as in a dedicated third car, the Saab then maybe makes a solid winter and commuter car (my commute is 5 miles so miles not an issue) as i weekend the mid-life mobile.

I used to daily a 2007 Kia Rio, and while it's been extremely reliable and by far the lowest total cost of ownership, I absolutely hated driving it. Especially considering I was paying insurance on a 'fun' car that was literally just sitting in the garage.

Now the Z4M made no sense to daily drive, especially in winter, so I picked up an E92M (an E90M before that) as a daily driver/beater and am much happier. Life is too short to drive cars you don't love.

That said, I am thinking about trading the E92M in for an i3. I have a commute of 25km round trip and the thought of decreasing gas and maintenance costs by a large margin is very enticing. I also hate parking the E92 in public or anywhere 'risky'.

That's awesome. I rented one a few years back and took it and my mom on a 4x4 trail near Santa Fe. Smashed the sills all to hell, got it high centered and had to push it off of some rocks. But turned it and didn't get any penalties. It wasn't fast, but it did the trick.

sometimes its nice having a total piece of crap and not getting people constantly trying to talk to you or take pics The Ferrari is terrible with that. I have to keep the windows up and music bumping to avoid convos at stoplights.

my civic feels about the same as my M3 doing 80mph on a smooth highway. granted there is more wind noise but otherwise its the same. No reason to put needless miles and depreciation (and rock chips!) on my M car when all im doing is sitting at 80-85 in the left lane for 30 minutes straight. I'd rather save my sports cars for the fun times when im actually using the performance.

Had a beater car on two separate times. Both times I bought the beater specifically to avoid driving my "good" car in the winter. Both times I quickly came to hate the beater, and drove the good car (if you have a good car, why not drive it).

I would never bother with a beater again. Just my opinion.

I personally enjoy the feeling of a fun-to-drive car with a luxurious interior and striking looks. It adds value to my life.

There's no way in hell I'd drive a beater or even a "regular" car daily, at least not for the forseeable future. I look forward to driving every time I see my cars.

I don't own a beater car, but I own 2 Japanese cars (daily drivers for my wife and daughter). When one of those cars are home, I will always drive them over my BMW (at least in the winter). I regularly wash my car in the winter (hot water hookup FTW) and leave it in the garage as long as possible.

Sometimes I work from home just because the roads are messy and I don't feel like getting my car dirty. It also helps keep the mileage down.

Technically the E90 335 M-sport is my summer 'beater'/daily compared to my Miata.

but I have a legit winter beater; 02 V70 T5. Been in the family(and over maintained by us) for the last 15 years. 290KM and still dead reliable. Sadly its auto but its clean and has a lot of updates/upgrades from the later years/R models; I love pic n pull yards for that stuff.

Sounds like we have a number of reasons.

1. Adverse weather car
2. Not taking my nice whip to a bad area
3. Life is too short M car everywhere all day
4. People who appreciate their nice car more having driven a crap car
5. People who don't want to get their nice ride messed up when going to the dump yard
6. The eco warriors squeezing that gas mileage
7. People who feel comfortable in what they know
8. Cars about to be handed down the family to those less experienced or less able to afford
9. It's cheap and cheerful
10. Low profile drug king pins maintaining their connects
11. I'm so made my E90 is my beater.

Ha tell me about it. While I don't regret having the C-HR, drag races with 3300 lbs of curb weight and a 144HP 4 banger with a CVT....you do the math.... Knowing I have my 135i with a Dinan S2 tune in the garage. And that's not even talking about the two essentially street legal race bikes I have in the garage too. While the Ninja is about 15 years old, it'll still pull 100+ MPH in first gear. Not bad for an old geezer.

Don't matter what you drive when your daily commute consists of an average speed of about 15 MPH for a minimum of 10 miles. You can have the best driver's car in the world but it'll be the same as a Yugo in that type of traffic....unbearable.

This. My commute is 30 shitty miles to the city in traffic. I'm not dragging a manual transmission sports car when I can drive my squishy truck.

Yes. My weekend/fun car is the M3 CS. My commuter is a 2018 i3. It saves me about $250-300 in gas a month, it lets me go in the carpool lane, and it has adaptive cruise which my M3 does not. It's an absolute dream to commute in. Torquey and goes 0-30 as fast with less fuss than my M3 CS, perfect for city driving. I can park it anywhere because of the size and the stature. The rear seats fold down and it has more cargo room than my M3. It handles like a gocart and I have free charging. It's also only $200/mo including tax. Here's my old 2015, which was replaced by a very similar 2018 a few months ago:

There is more to a "fun" car than horsepower. I really love driving my i3 because of how torquey it is and how well it drives in city traffic. The best part is both my M3 CS and my i3 make me look forward to driving the other. When I'm in my M3 CS I miss the adaptive cruise and park-it-anywhere attitude, when I'm in my i3 I miss the sound, power, and handling of a high performance M sedan. Different tasks, different tools.

While traffic sucks (I sit in it every day) I would still rather be in my m3 than anything else. And when the road opens up and I get the opportunity to punch it it makes the whole thing worth it.

It’s crazy how many incentives you get in CA. It’s a no brainer to lease those. I don’t know why everyone doesn’t drive one there.
