Tail Wag

Does anyone else get tail wag when in Sports and just give a little bit of medium throttle? Dry roads and warm tyres. It corrects pretty quickly, just a little squirm left and right. Not complaining, just curious

Does it at hard shifts at WOT. Would be happy if it didn't. Like to see more tire on the rear to hold traction better.

Curious why do you guys like it? When I punch it I want it to go straight. A car getting loose on acceleration is a handling problem not a sport feature.

I don't see having enough power to break the rear end loose as a problem. Too much power is never enough.

I can't see how the feeling of losing the rear end after going over the smallest of holes on a bend is something to enjoy.

If I pull away on a wet road the Z4 feels as planted as my old TT Quattro but it's like being in a washing machine on roads that are anything other than perfect.

"as planted as my old TT Quattro"

Comparing to an all-wheel drive vehicle is impressive.

Power without traction is worthless.

Throttle House Road Course

Corvette Z51 495BHP 1:11:53

Mustang GT 500 760BHP 1:11:82

Corvette Z51 495BHP VS Dodge Demon 808BHP

Standing start 1/4 mile StingRay by 2 car lengths

Rolling 1/4 mile Demon by 2 car lengths.

Its not about breaking the backend loose. I can put down 11's as long as I hold in the throttle on the COBRA with 13" wide Road Course tires. But the car is still going straight not wiggling its butt all over the track.

Narrower 275 front tires. Rear Tires are 315. Tile squares are 12X12"

That little side step the Z4 does on the 1/2 shift & occasionally on the 2/3 shift is dumb. It should just chirp & go straight if it breaks loose.

Hard launch will always give the Z4 some slippage still needs to go straight not hook to either side. Car is alleged to have an LSD in it.

One place it does shine is on high speed passes. Some of our rural interstates typically are running 85/90MPH. Making a pass to 100/105mph comes real easy to the car.

"Power without traction is worthless."

True, unless you enjoy senseless fun.

Sounds like you should have ordered the Track Handling package with the electronic LSD?

I decided to avoid all of that and order the 30i. O-60 in 5.2 seconds is plenty fast for me - I don't want to kill myself or someone else having the rear end spin out while accelerating from a curve. I'm not a professional driver who happily drifts the car through the turns.

All are standard equipment on the USA M40i. Only sport-performance option available is the wheel & tire choice + color of the brakes (Red or Blue)

BMW says:

Handling, Ride and Braking Ensuring a smooth, safe, comfortable drive.

M Sport Differential
Servotronic power-steering assist
High-rigidity body/chassis unit with aluminum hood
Aluminum double-pivot spring and strut-type front suspension
Central Link rear suspension with cast-aluminum upper transverse links
Vehicle-speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering
4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, ventilated front and rear
Front and rear anti-roll (stabilizer) bars
Twin-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers
Variable Sport Steering
M Sport brakes
Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled damper
M Chassis and suspension system

BTW Drifting is a sport not the fastest way around a turn.

Agree with "badfitter" it is fun - but it is expensive fun if you do it a lot without a tire sponsor. As it is in the car I would drift in the tires are history in 5,000-6,000 miles.

Yeah, my bad. The Track Handling package is what us 30i buyers option in to get us a little closer to the M40i cars.

I love to watch the hotshots drive the high-horsepower cars drifting around each turn and leaving trails of smoke behind as their tires melt. In the back of my mind I'm always thinking "Holy Sh*t, do they replace the tires each week?". I like to move out smartly but I'm not leaving my tires behind me on the asphalt or in the turns. And somehow, I still have a blast driving hilly, winding roads.

Melt 'em if ya' got 'em!

Cobra has 100 Treadwear rubber which wears quickly but really grips. 488WHP in a 2250lbs car needs all the help the tires can give it. .

Basic composition of the tires limits how many days a year you can street drive it due to weather.

The Z4 stock 19" Pilot Super Sport tire is 300 treadware & will last a few years.

I'm old so I've been driving fast cars for a long time......well before the advent of ABS, stability control, traction control, etc. etc. Certainly a car should be well balanced but the ability to drift the car or whatever using the throttle and your head is something that I truly appreciate. It seems that every year, they make it harder and harder to actually experience driving and it's frankly becoming a bit artificial.

I, for one, appreciate the ability to turn off the nannies on occasion and I'm glad the Z4 retains some feel to it.
