He has reviewed a 2020 M40i before, 2023 review up. You won’t learn anything new but it’s nice to see the Z4 get praise.

Question for you....many reviewers when considering the 30i comment about the lower weight making up for less power in driving dynamics. What do you think? Can you even tell the difference in weight? Does the 30i handle better than the 'overweight' m40?

I think i know the answer but just curious what your take is....

Thanks

I'd say that the extra 130hp well makes up for the added weight between the two lol. I'd also say that the M40i also works better towards the 50/50 weight ratio. Yes I can tell that the M40i has more oomph.

Savagegeese review (1st one) was very complimentary toward the new at the time Z4 30i. The 2nd review done recently was a rehash of the car while picking apart BMW for not doing enough with the platform.

They never reviewed the 40i which was a huge letdown, the extra hp would change some of their opinions.

Is there any truth to the rumor that since you took possession of the M40i you have filed papers to legally change your middle name to oomph?

I've already read that too in a paper magazine (yes, it still exists ) here in Europe, that the 30i was more balanced.
But it was just a weight impression I suppose.

Anyway, don't forget that in Europe the M40i is "only" 340HP whereas in the US it's 385HP if I'm not wrong.
Something that can also come into balance in the appreciation.
So it's sure about the ooomph, but I don't know about riding in twisties
Ps: I'd rather have the ooomph in a straight line, Im not a race car driver

Hahaha.. would be hilarious to get a personalized plate with that if I didn't already have other, more important, plans.

I remember your post concerning what you selected, and I think that is a totally appropriate vanity plate!

https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/07/05/b...20distribution.

Thought this was an interesting read that breaks down it's weight distribution and compares it to the likes of the M3.

I’ve never driven a 30i, that said I would imagine for a majority of drivers the 255hp motor would be very satisfactory on the road. I’ve owned 505hp Z06 to 170hp NC Miata, the Miata (largely because of the convertible) I found to be more enjoyable on twisty public roads. So I will never knock the 30i as other then the engine it can be optioned out to be essentially the same car as the 40i.

I purchased a CPO 40i as I do enjoy the exhaust note and mid range power on these very flat and straight coastal Carolina roads, also used I found more optioned the way I wanted.

Also just a note.

C&D recently did an updated review of the M40i and clocked the fastest time yet of any publication (US version)

0-60 3.5s
1/4 mile 12.0 @ 116mph

75mph mpg’s 37

The Z4 M40i is a seriously quick sports car if you want that, I doubt the general public would have any idea they can scoot that quickly.

Having had the 30i for over 2 years, I'm telling you that the quickness of the M40i was NOT the reason why I wanted to upgrade. Though it's a nice benefit...

I wanted it for more superficial reasons. The sound of the exhaust. The peace of mind that I have knowing I have the highest trim. Not having to explain to other car enthusiasts that I "just have the 4 cylinder."

I get that. I do have a thing for hp and if owning a 30i I’d always be wondering what an extra 130hp would be like.

Just wondering how would extra HP change their opinion about BMW spending all their money on SUVs? As you said, SG liked the 30i just fine. They felt let down by BMW's direction as whole.

They left the higher performance model out while saying the Z4 hasn’t progressed. Perhaps driving the M40i they would see there is more potential in the G29.

Let’s be honest, these are the among best reasons to have an M40i

I would have loved to owned a 6 cyl.
The sound is different and I’m sure the motor is also more pleasant at low revs.
