Mercedes Reportedly Sold Over A Million Vehicles With Excess Emissions

Quote:
Daimler's legal problems could be growing as Sueddeutsche Zeitung is reporting the automaker has been accused of selling over a million diesel-powered vehicles which produce excess emissions.

Citing a search warrant issued by a court in Stuttgart, the newspaper says more than one million vehicles have been sold in Europe and the United States which have excess emissions. The report goes on to say these sales occurred between 2008 and 2016.

The investigation is reportedly focused on the four-cylinder OM651 and 3.0-liter V6 OM642 engines. Prosecutors are trying to determine if they have been equipped with a defeat device similar to the one Volkswagen used for the Dieselgate scandal.

The repercussions could be staggering as Volkswagen has been forced to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars and the search warrant reportedly indicates the models could be banned in Europe.

When reached for comment, a Daimler spokesperson told Reuters the report was simply "speculation." However, they confirmed the automaker is cooperating with the investigation.

Mercedes' diesel engines have been under increased scrutiny and the company eventually withdrew its application to have 2017 models with diesel engines approved for sale in the United States. The company is also facing investigations by the Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the California Air Resources Board.

Personally I think they need to do a better job than just looking at a one time snapshot of emissions for looking at suitability.

Nobody wants polluted air but this is just one minor and very politicized aspect of the equasion

What they should be doing is looking at overall predicted longevity of types and brands as well as different considerations of impact of production as well as reclamation and lifetime "cost" per mile

For example.....EV's may emit no emissions but you have to drive the thing for nearly 100k to compensate for the impact associated with things like battery production (rare earth metal mining)

Diesel's are frequently driven 200k or much further.

The obsessive focus on a single data point (emissions) is myopic in my opinion

Agreed, I have an MB bluetc, I get about 800Km out of a fill up. I love the thing, I drove to Pensacola last year and back with some excursions. $150 all in. I'd like to hang onto the thing for 10 years. Did you see the Top Gear episode where they compare the M3 to a Prius, I get the eff you attitude but the facts are quite interesting. The whole EV thing is being driven by government.
