http://www.motortrend.com/news/infin...gine-for-2018/

That thing has to be a tuning nightmare.

Interesting. I'm no rocket scientist but this would have to be activated or deactivated by the user correct. Or is this thing changing on the fly by input of the accelerator.

I think this makes it easier to understand - http://autoweek.com/article/technolo...n=awdailydrive

Quote:
The technology will appear first in a 2.0-liter transverse-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder Infiniti QX50 in the 2017 calendar year/2018 model year. It will be mated to a CVT transmission. Both port and direct fuel injection will be used, and Infiniti lists a 27 percent improvement in fuel economy over their outgoing conventional-combustion V6.

The hinged connecting rods smooth out engine operation enough to allow engineers to remove the second-order balance shafts -- engine vibration and noise is said to be similar to that of a V6. While the first variable compression application will be a transverse inline-four, they are working on other applications.

CVT? So much for pretensions of being a performance brand.

Ohhhh Nissan. We know you mean well ...

... but this makes no sense from a performance standpoint -- not to mention long-term reliability, which is your bugaboo. I mean, you're already the second least-reliable Japanese carmaker behind Mitsubishi, which just killed the only car worth anything to anyone ...

Next!

True, but I thought that project was eventually killed and it never made it into a production vehicle.

... which saw fit to buy it out completely four years later and begin the long line of relatively boring, noncompetitive, parts-shared models that DID contribute to Saab Auto's failure.

Seriously, if this had been on a BMW you all would be singing its praises.

According to SCOTT26, yeah.

Granted, BMW can put out a piece of poop and SCOTT26 will claim it is the best driving piece of poop ever built.

That's because ... well ... it's his job to do that.

If BMW makes poop, and there was a market for said poop, it's his job to do his best to sell that poop to as many poop shoppers as possible. Thing is, you talk about poop to poop enthusiasts on a forum in a different way that you present poop to, say, soccer moms who just need nice poop to help haul around.

If SCOTT26 decided to reveal that his poop isn't as good as some other poop, well, he'd likely need to find a gig selling something else. Patties, maybe. Or chips. Maybe even loaves?
