Would you trade your Z4 for a C8 convertible?

Or maybe phrased in another way, if you could buy either a Z4 or C8 Convertible at MSRP with no order waiting, what would you do?

For me, there are many things I love about the Z4, but I have to admit I am envious that the C8 appears to have an extra level of thoughtful design compared to the Z4. Better camera (with front camera) and features that use the camera in cools different ways for example. A dash display that just seems so much better laid out that what the Z4 has. Heck, even my Golf R has a way better rear camera than my Z4. The Z4 camera is grainy and the aspect ratio is stretched because of the sensor view. And IDrive7 just seems kind of clunky right now. Maybe it will get better? Maybe BMW will offer a better gauge display in a future update?

If I could do it over I would seriously consider a C8 convertible. But, a C8 was just never going to happen so I'll go with what is available now. Life is too short.

My 440 lease was running out in June & the plan was to get a C8. Saw with the huge waiting list plus possible general industry slowdown with the virus.

The StingRay I wanted Z06 or GS would be maybe 3 years into the future where I could walk in get a good price, order the car & see it in 5 to 8 weeks.

So no, I would not swap the Z-M40i for the currant C8 base model.

C8 convertible doesn’t fit the bill for me as a daily driver and street parallel/parker in NYC though. The Porsche Boxster S didn’t fit that bill either...

The Z4 and the C8 convertible are not in the same category to me. My Z4 has a great trunk, a very nice interior, excellent gas mileage, and I really love everything about it except no 6MT option. It is a very good DD for people that need no more than 2 seats. It's really like driving my M4 without a back seat.

The C8 doesn't have the daily driver capabilities that I need. I owned a Corvette for 7 years and I loved it, but it didn't fit the bill like my Z4 does.

Don't like Vettes. But, but, but. . . the C8 is pretty damn nice (exterior, interior, and hp), and it definitely would have been a serious contender, if not for the wait for the vert and final cost if spec'd as desired. They look even better in person than online. Yeah, I seriously paused before pulling the trigger on the Z4. Happy with what I have, but being my first BMW, I am a bit let down with some of the iDrive quirks, bubble in dash, roof replacement, and the dealership's lack of effort to fix issues some of which they caused.

These forums had me pretty well prepared for some of the gremlins before I purchased, though I sorta hoped that those were outlier issues, and that my car would be the perfect problem free child of myth. Back to the C8, yeah, I would seriously consider it (neighbor said same thing, last night, about not liking Vettes, but he would buy one--he even went to the dealer thinking they would have a couple on the floor---lol).

Fortunately for me, my Z4 M40i has been a "perfect problem free child".

Yes, I would (am?) considering it. Maybe in a year or two, depending on availability and pricing through the various GM partner programs. Very nicely equipped C8 Convertible is going to cost out the door about the same as my Z4 M40i. So it’s not the price, it’s the design, fun factor, etc. I said it before, BMW could have made a Corvette-killer if they had wanted to.

The C8 has its quality problems just like some of the Z4’s do, so that shouldn’t be your reason to switch.

Given a few years and plenty of production, the C8 will probably become very common on the roads. The Z4 will always be more niche and unique I think. I'd still love to test drive a C8 and if space/money were no object, maybe I would own both! Ha, I barely have space for 2 cars as it is.

I checked my lottery tickets and I have to work monday...

LOL, yes, there is that. Don't get me wrong, I think the Z4 is an extremely nice car, and as a matter of fact just tremendously enjoyed driving it today! But I just don't have that brand loyalty. If I like another car better, I'll get that one.

Honestly, I would go and get a McLaren if I won the lottery.

I don't have brand loyalty either, but would rate my experiences with GM (local dealership and corporate) as some of the absolute worst you could ask for. I could seriously write a book about it!

McLaren seems appealing, but there is no dealership close by.

McLarens are fun in a straight line, but they’re definitely not an immersive driving experience (not that the Z4 is either...).

No, but I thought about it.

The C8 looks and performs great.....but the Z4 has a nicer interior and is more upscale in many ways. I prefer dealing with my local BMW dealer vs. my local GM dealer too.

Depends what you're doing; I certainly wouldn't blame someone for wanting a C8 but my heart says yes and my mind says no......not as good for what I want/what I do. ....also, just comparing MSRP's a loaded Stingray 'vert is 10% more than my Z4 M40i and I'd probably want the Z51 which would push it up another 7% ....the 'vette is still inexpensive for what it is but it's more than the Z4

Nicer interior, but piss poor gauge and infotainment design. I can live with it, but when I see what the C8 or AMG has (for example), it's just so much better than what BMW has done. The team behind the design of these gauges and surrounding layout needs a kick in the pants.

Other than the backwards tach, I really like the Z4 layout and the way it can be customized to my liking and I'm even getting used to the tach.

I don't mind the backwards tach either, but it's other things about the gauge cluster layout that sucks. Small fonts, small widgets, overlapping graphics, truncated media information, poor use of the space between the gauges, a useless map display, a useless route preview and an uninspired look. The other screen is better. I'm wondering if/when we see the android auto update if much will change or not (I'm thinking not). I can't think of one thing about the current displays that makes me thing 'wow that is cool!', and I wish that was not the case.

Pet peeves of course. It doesn't affect my ownership decision, I just think it can be better because others are doing it better.

That's my point. None of those things are an issue to me, nor do I agree with most the sentiment.

To each their own; I haven't had an issue with either item on the Z4.....I like it better than my Jaguar F type and have no issues with it compared to our GLC43AMG.....but then, I haven't been in a C8 yet.

I think it's the opposite. Few available because of plant closures and the ones people are trying to sell, have crazy markup. My neighbor who is a Corvette enthusiast thinks GM will raise prices in following model years.

Try to lease a corvette. Good luck. Payment is in M5 category. No thanks. Had a 2014 and blew torque converter in first month. Nothing premium about dealership experience. The new corvette looks good though.

Some manufacturers seem worse than others when it comes to price adjustments due to currency values. Volkswagen seems to price their vehicles very well in Canada in spite of dollar fluctuations. It was one of the main reasons I got my Golf R last year. BMW prices are more in line with currency values so at least %30 higher here in Canada.

I haven't compared GM prices lately though. Toyota pricing was always pretty good too so I bought some of their vehicles..
