Idk, BMW has to compete with these cars, too. Imo new 2 series is a response to Merc's CLA which does pretty well. If I had to choose, I'd get a BMW over any VW AG product. My experience with them was not great, esp with Audis.

Weird, I owned two VW, an Audi and now two Porsche and two Ducati. All have been marvelous.

I have a 2010 s4 with dsg and it had a gear selector lever position sensor quit. Because it's stuffed inside the trans, its a trans out and cases split repair. And it's just a very DIY non-friendly car, I'd rather have a 335i. I also have mk5 jetta 2.5 and it's full of triple Square bolts. I don't enjoy working on it either. Example - I did rear brakes on it recently, it totally sucked. Before buying this "ducking" s4, I was looking at b8 a4s, could not find anything not burning oil and without timing chain stretched and with 6mt.
Can't comment on Porsches. As for the Ducatis, these were bought by VW and are not really designed in Wolfsburg or Ingolstadt. I would not really consider one either having ridden only Japanese sportbikes before. However, I would consider BMW motorcycles.

I'm assuming different from previous BMWs

Not sure who this ad is aimed at? Clearly not me as it leaves me cold.
And while we're on the subject, why/how does a great car maker like BMW produce such cr*p ads?

interesting to see not only some of the new designs come out but the direction of the marketing and the ads. Im curious to see how these sell.

Should be fine. If buyers are purchasing the A3 and CLA, 2er Gran Coupe should sell without problems. There is nothing spectacular about any of these models - the purpose is to introduce and capture new buyers to the brand and hopefully get them to stay and move up to other models.

Alas, for many buyers of this class of car, the difference between rear and front drive cars is not a consideration nor even a known fact. I think it will sell well as does the CLA and A class Mercs.

None of those is for me, and that is okay. Every car made by a manufacturer doesn't need to fit me.

I just wish that BMW had made a sedan version of its wonderful 2 series. I know that it is harder to fit everything in in a RWD car but it would have been nice and would have been a real differentiator against Merc.

it needs a better hofmeister kink for it to work. it just looks like every other compact sedan right now. Im sure it'll sell (lease) well to the exact audience they intend it for but its too expensive for the m235i to justify going to fwd.. people will just save money and get the wrx if they need awd and want hp.

So in typical forum fashion, let's ignore the facts/reality and comment on with half witted tribal slogans.

If you read the reviews of the M135i hatch, which shares the mechanicals with this sedan, you'd find out that it's handling is (unanimously? or at least mostly) considered excellent/very good/superb depending on the reviewer. Many of these reviewers went in with low expectations and prepared to be disappointed, because they mostly liked the previous RWD version. All of them came out super impressed by the new car, and some say it handles better than the old RWD version. Gasp.

So at the very least, there is sufficient material out there to cast doubt that it's an abomination. After all, Mini's are fun to drive, I know that much. We should all perhaps test drive it first before rendering verdict.

In case you think I have some interest in the car, I don't. I won't buy one for me, as it doesn't currently fit any of the slots in my garage. But as a tool to battle the S3/AMG35's of the world, it's welcome to the battle arena...

Well, it's certainly better looking than it's sisters X1/X2/Countryman.

Going to sell a crap load of them. There are so many A3/Golf R/CLA in my neighborhood. Luckily for me, they will cost the same to repair as any other BMW.

I think you're over looking the fact that the majority of people who buy / lease the "lower end" BMW's do it purely for the badge. Highly doubt anyone will be cross shopping the 2GC with a WRX. If those were my only 2 options, I would gladly take the former... Subies have been using the horribly outdated EJ for decades now.

The 2GC is going to be driven by the young crowd who wants a status symbol, and something to beat on from red light to red light. I'm thinking spoiled high school kids or fresh college grads, which somehow plays PERFECTLY with the ad... Interesting.
