In 10 years, all Bimmers will be M cars, and M cars will be Super M's. Hahaha

I respect the performance capability of the M340 but it cannot be compared to an M3. Is it a real M car? Maybe. It definitely is more than it's not.

Right now an M3 uses essentially the same engine and most of the components so very little to differentiate them. The M340 is a beast in its own.

The M brand death has arrived.

Which is 100% true lol. Not because its a m340, but because of the lack of feeling while driving it. Its simply put not a M car lol doesnt make it a bad car though

Since BMWs are about as common as Toyotas nowadays, and BMW seems intent on literally everybody owning one (which of course is their right and prerogative as a business whose first obligation is to make money), I see the "real M vs not real M" debate as basically a "my car is a more special version of a not so special car".

I mean, let's face it. This isn't a debate about which version of a Ferrari you have.

This is simple branding strategy for BMW. It's sells them more cars but it in reality it's a "good", "gooder" and "goodiest". I say they keep M Performance and M as Two separate entities.

People do this already with the M-sport package. They will go out of their way to tell its an "M-sport"... my 2014 F31 had little M badges on the fenders and people wold ask me if it was an M car... most people are completly clueless...

I'm very happy with the M performance line. M's are too harsh for me. standard cars are too bland. And I would take M340i over F80, any day.

M performance is high performance street car, real M is a track car (. Depending your definition of track) that can be used on the street.
Whoever drives M550 vs m5, or m2 vs m240 know what I'm talking about.

I don't care what they call the "M Performance" models, so long as they stop using cerium grey trim!

The reason people are bitching about M Performance cars is because M owners got to pay an extra $30K to get 0.5 sec faster car on a 0-60...

And we get an xDrive as a bonus so we are using them year round...lol

Yes, this is a Dakar Yellow 435i M Performance (now an M435i) Dinan stage 2, manual gear box, xDrive and very proud of it.

I wish BMW kept the M designation to the proper M cars. If this helps drive sales though where they can continue improving upon the true M line, then I guess I'm for it...

While I don't 100% agree with the decision, I can't say that I am in the slightest surprised by this, I saw it coming from a mile a way, it was inevitable, especially being that BMW is all about the ///Money.

I disagree there, but I see where you're coming from. I've owned 5 M-cars: 2 M3s, an M5, an M4 and an X5M.

First off, if an X5M is a "real" M car, it is definitely not built for the track. Can it do impressive things on a track? Yes, but those accomplishments will ALWAYS be conditioned by the phrase "for an SAV". It's not a pure track car. For anyone.

And...last November I went to Barber Motorsports for a Porsche driving clinic (my 3rd opportunity to do this). I can honestly say that when a Porsche is on a track, it looks and feels like it belongs there. I can't say that for any of my M cars. They always felt like amazingly capable compromises...but compromises nonetheless.

Yes, they do amazing things. But I've never looked at (or driven) an M car and thought "this car truly belongs on a track".

Many will disagree, which is the beauty of forums like this. But that's my opinion.

Just traded my 2020 m340i for a 2020 hock m2c.
In retrospect the m340i was amazing and sounded as such.
With that being said the m2c keeps me grinning, and all the American cars rev'n at me 😎

I'm not sure why this is news, since this is how BMW organizes the models on BYO already.

An M car is simply more capable, but all this is magical fairy dust marketing.

Now there's more legitimacy to people that argue an M3 is an overpriced 3-series.
