Thumbs down Don't you love it when you get a ticket for going 75 on the freeway?

Peculiar OC cop decided to single me out out of all those around me going 70+ and hand me a ticket. I can try & explain the specificity of the situation but I still haven't fathomed it yet.
It's like being at work, doing your tasks, then having a supervisor come up to you and ordering you to do your job. This analogy is a carbon copy of what happened to me. I still can't fathom how or why or what

If there is a BMW god, you deserve the next ticket. Only, for going 1 MPH over .

OP I'd show up in court. Chances are he won't.

I once mentioned to a cop that pulled me over that there were lots of people going faster than I was driving. He asked me if I ever went fishing. I said, yes, all the time. He asked, "Did you catch *all* the fish?"

Point taken.

Still, if the limit was 70 and you got pulled over for 75, that's a bit of BS. Most cops give you 10 over.

How much was 70+ and what was the speed limit? The cop may have just been doing his job

This is probably the best analogy to shut people up when they use the "well everybody was doing it" argument

You come across very poorly, like a spoiled brat. How old are you? And I don't think you understand what an analogy is, because you didn't make one.

At least around here, many departments reduce the tolerance to 5 over once the limit hits 70.

I stopped using my RD when the limit went to 70. I'm happy at 72-74. A trooper passed me yesterday while I was doing 74 and didn't even glance at me. In my younger days I was much less mellow and would crank it up to 90 on the interstate. I've since realized that the meager savings in time is just not worth the risk. But those are lessons you learn with age.

Yeah, rule of thumb in Australia used to be 10% over was okay.

Now there are cameras everywhere which will ping you for doing 3 over, even in 70 zones.
(5km/over in a 110km/h zone since we're metric).

I actually just picked up a fine for the same thing: 75km/h in a 70km/h zone.
(that'd be 47 in a 43 zone if I were in the states)

My first traffic offence in a decade. In the state I grew up in you can write a letter to get it turned into an official warning if you have a clean driving record, but not in this state. Law says you got caught, speeding risks lives, pay the fine or go to court.

Anyway, it sucks... but y'know - don't speed.
(Or the way I like to look at it: you took a calculated legal risk. Don't get pissy when that risk turns into a reality.)

As to why you were pulled out of a row of traffic - well, they gotta pick someone, and why wouldn't it be the big BMW sedan?

Just because everybody else is breaking the law doesn't give you the right to.

Sorry.

The fishing line is one I've used myself for many different gripes by the public when receiving police service. Why don't you go arrest a child molester, murderer, bank robber etc.

Another line that is great for folks that blow stop signs goes like this. They will always say they slowed down. The line goes how about I pull out my baton and start hitting you, do you want me to slow down or stop.

OP played the game and got caught. His vile towards the cop is a bit telling, and just to be clear the cop forgot about him the minute he got back in his car and then had to decide what he was having for lunch. It's not personal, it's just the job.

Unless the OP isn't disclosing all the facts. If he got ticketed for just a little over the limit perhaps he'd done something to draw attention to himself or some other reason for an attitude adjustment.

My advice would be, roll down your window, turn off your music, put down your phone, and be polite. Admit to what you've done wrong because you probably know, say sorry and ask for a break. That usually goes a long way.

This.

I speed all the time. I get stopped at least 3-4 times per year. The last ticket I got was in 2014 in a dedicated speed trap.

Here's my philosophy:

I speed. I'm a fully formed adult and I accept the risks.
If I'm caught, I admit it, tell them the speed if they ask, and apologize.
As I speed almost everywhere I go, I'm caught and ticketed 0.000000000001% of the time I drive, I'll accept that because I'm a grown-up.

I do like the fishing line one...hadn't heard that before. I wonder what the police officer would say if you responded with "All the ones I ever saw" though?

Grumpy - what would you do...aside from being tempted to beat me with a baton just because I'm me?

Because it is sort of true right? You might have caught all the fish, you don't know what's below the surface...only the ones you see.

You got pulled over because you were in a BMW and most people will say you can afford to pay the ticket

Were you going 75 but the others were doing 73? Often if you are going even slightly faster than the cars around you, then you will be singled out.

I've done 80 on the highway past cops, but this was on RT 384 in CT, and I was in the center lane getting passed by multiple drivers. I've learned that if you stay similar to the flow of traffic you will be fine. 2 mph over everyone else around you and you stand out.

And yes, your analogy is perhaps the worst I've seen, and I say perhaps because I'm not even certain it deserves to be called an analogy.

Your attitude in this thread makes me suspect you richly deserved that ticket, so you enjoy your prize.

When I was younger and didn't know any better I pulled out the ole "The guy in front of me what doing well over 100."

The trooper then asked me if I had ever been duck hunting. He said you never shoot the one in the front. Always start with the one in the back. He then laughed and said you were going slower and easier to catch.

Since then I've learned that no respectable person pulls out the "everyone else is doing it." If you're you're in the wrong, you're in the wrong; doesn't matter if everyone else is doing it. Accept your punishment, make corrections and move on with life.
