BMW 333i - one of the best (and rarest) BMW ever made

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
BMW 333i was an E30 made by BMW and Alpina for the South African market. It had an M30B32 engine, which at the time was fitted in the much larger 533i, 633CSi and 733i models. Alpina provided the specially-developed inlet and exhaust manifolds and plenum chamber, heavy-duty copper-cored radiator, and various other cast alloy bits. The numbers: 194hp at 5,500rpm and 295Nm of torque at 4,300rpm.

The 333i model was prepared by specialists from BMW Motorsport GmbH and the equally renowned Alpina company. For the local market the car was a substitute for the E30 M3, which was never officially offered in South Africa. From the outside, the 333i stood out with its aerodynamic package, which included the top and bottom of both bumpers and thresholds as well as the tailgate spoiler. Chrome-plated window frames were removed, and the rear windows did not tilt. Another unique solution was to mark the model, which was glued to the red and blue colors of BMW Motorsport. The car was offered in only four colors - white, black, red and silver.

The cabin was fitted with BMW Motorsport buckets and the Alpina counter with red indications, scaled to 270 km/h. The place on the central ventilation grid on the driver's side was taken by the on-board computer, which informed about the oil temperature in the engine and rear bridge, oil pressure and vacuum in the intake manifold. In addition, you could count on leather upholstery, electrically controlled windows or an openable roof.

Alpina gave 16-inch rims and an option in the form of reinforced brakes (front discs with a diameter of 296 mm) and ABS transplanted from the flagship seven. BMW Motorsport prepared a suspension with a revised geometry, shorter and harder springs, and Bilstein gas-charged shock absorbers. The differential received a 25% gap. The transmission also included the Getrag transmission with shortened gears and "dog leg" system. (first gear in position typical for two).

The main point of the program was the engine, which filled the space under the hood so tightly that the customers had to choose between power steering or air conditioning! Alpina still had to prepare special equipment for the drive unit - custom-made manifolds, computer software and radiator.

Absolutely wonderful!

Am I the only one who got goosebumps and suddenly felt that this is the first "M-Performance" 3-series? Especially the overlay of the 333i over the M tricolor! Perhaps more accurately, the direct predecessor to the E46 ZHP? The execution is different but the aim seems to be the same.

The words, the philosophies outlined in the product announcement, they tell the whole story of classic BMW:

"Sportiness has always been part of BMW's heritage.

Because BMW is one of the few car manufacturers with a long history of success in motorsport.

This constant challenge in sporting competition has strongly influenced the characteristics of all BMW products.

Because ultimately, a company is like a human being.

If it goes in for sport, it will be fit, more efficient and also more successful.

And this success has always been built into products bearing the name BMW.

Working in some cases under difficult conditions, a motorsport design team has to prepare cars for the most gruelling competition.

And it is precisely the team spirit developed in this process that gives unique drive to each member of the team.

The result is overwhelming enthusiasm - enthusiasm which, in turn, provides the basis for a totally different attitude towards the motor car."

If that doesn't scream Freude am Fahren or "The Ultimate Driving Machine" I don't know what does!
