I agree with this guy. Phone and technology integration are table stakes for many buyers these days. Older cars can be easily upgraded, but newer ones are a huge pain - meaning if you don't like what you buy in this regard, it's hard or impossible to change.

I think BMW is really cocking this up and needs to fix it.

I don't have or use Carplay in my cars (I had it in a previous car) and it's great for nav integration & music integration, but I don't miss it one bit personally. There is a large class of buyers however that DO prioritize this as a feature when deciding what to buy.

I don't even know wtf Apple Carplay is nor do I care.
I'm going to guess you're over 40, and when you go to buy a car the "infotainment system" is an afterthought. You probably want to know about the specs, ie performance, HP/Torque/breaks and tire size. You are probably one of those crazy people who take the car for a test drive and check out driving position and road feel, maybe push the demo a bit, see how it corners and breaks....in fact Ill bet you even care that what the car looks like, or doesn't look like.

The times they are a changing my friend. And maybe someone could reply and tell us both what Apple CarPlay is.

I only skimmed the article. I'm going to probably get the ridicule of many as not being a real car enthusiast. But having smart phone integration does impact your life significantly if you daily drive your car and live in an area where traffic is a total mess. I can't tell you the number of times Waze has saved me time and aggravation by setting my route based on real time traffic conditions. The alerts on speed and radar traps is also a nice perk.

I've been able to get Android integration on my 1 series via a different avenue. While it's not perfect, it gets most of the way there and provides flexibility which Android Auto or Car Play won't give me. I installed a Mirrorlink box which allows me to cast the video and audio from my Android phone into my iDrive system. I got quickly dependent on this setup.

When I got a new daily driver, I quickly realized how much I was missing with the awful as sin Toyota Entune 3.0 system. The trim package I have uses an app in the Entune 3.0 system called Scout GPS. The smart phone syncing works occasionally and some times requires me to kill the smart phone app I have to install to allow the data link to be established via Bluetooth or USB hard wire. The Scout GPS app many times can't find the destinations I'm trying to look up, sets routes that doesn't make sense, and is awfully slow. Plus Scout GPS crashes constantly. I would try Android Auto but Toyota was taking the same stupid stance as BMW and only doing CarPlay. Oh, and CarPlay was just recently pushed out with Toyota's infotainment system so they're really playing catch up. But even Toyota finally got the clue and is starting to also push out Android Auto support on upcoming models. Whether there is going to be a retrofit with existing cars (especially those with Entune 3.0) remains to be seen.

And the ridicule about the issues with CarPlay is unwarranted. If I was forced to pay a yearly subscription for a feature, you damn straight I would expect that crap to work. If not, I would expect regular software updates to make sure the feature works.

Now that my 135i has been relegated to weekend/fun status, I wish I could transfer what I have installed in the 135i into my C-HR.

My e46s and e39 both have wired and wireless carplay
(and it's incredibly better than the iDrive in my 2017 BMW)

And who doesn't want police locations on display?

It took ages to find my 6mt without I-drive. I love how spartan the interior is, what's wrong with standard bluetooth anyway? If the car-play freaks are so obsessed with their phones, maybe they should take a bus. This would give more room to the real drivers.

I mostly want carplay for waze, so I can have the car warn me upcoming police-- let's me keep my driver's license.

Though I also enjoy running Harry's GPS lap timer on track and the ability to pull codes, run extra gauges, and monitor tire temps on my head unit.

In other words, total poser purposes

That said, I, too, searched long and hard to buy an e9X without iDrive back when we bought ours. iDrive just blows.

Wow never thought that car play is very important to some people. What's important to me when I'm in my daily driver car is my music streaming thru regular bluetooth and navigation (only when I have to go somewhere that I dont know, but even then, I can just use google maps and it will be connected via my car's bluetooth thru speakers of the car).
What else do you really need when driving? Maybe I just can't relate because I have android.

CarPlay is the only modern car tech I care about.

Fumbling with your phone while driving is dumb. All build into car nav is terrible. Leaving your phone in your pocket and being able to use, in your case, google maps on the car's built in screen is great. As is being able to select what you're listening to over bluetooth on a simplified for car use interface.

Plus it stays up to date as the car gets older, as the car is just the display-- the interface is determined by the phone.

And "free" data (as in, it uses your phone's data instead of requiring a data plan). And it barely touches the battery life of your phone, as the car's GPS is used instead of the phones.

It's just great-- and invalidates the need for all the crap ass infotainment that comes with cars stock (e.g. iDrive).

oh I guess for you it matters.
For me my car's built-in in nav is more than enough to get from point A to B, I can control my pandora music thru my car's regular bluetooth, I can answer my phone calls thru my regular bluetooth, I don't mess with my messages when I'm driving and I dont need data for my car due to reasons stated above.
I drive about 200 miles a day and that works for me. Probably just me.

WhenTF did we get more concerned with gadgets in order to justify how good a car is. Give me a big engine in a small car I will listen to it purr before IGAF about electronic gadgets.

I couldn't bring myself to use the built in nav-- modern phone nav is vastly better at traffic avoidance and I wouldn't have a license without police location notifications.

And, pandora is supported under carplay-- so you wouldn't need to be fiddling with your phone to select your music.

Aka, you could still be doing the same thing you're currently doing-- it would just work better

BMW's modern cars are all garbage to drive, so gadgets is where the competition is

I actually test drove a Kona Electric to potentially replace my i3. I liked it but it was FWD which IMHO is so completely wrong and stupid on a torquey electric car. Wheelspin was bad and I can't honestly drive another FWD car again. Interior was nice though and I though it was very very good especially for the price.

But apple carplay was this writer's issue? Is he on drugs?! My F80 and my i3 have no problems with carplay.

I'd actually rather eat shit on a daily basis than use carplay. Aside from having Waze available, I don't even understand how anyone feels like it offers some kind of advantage to iDrive. I'd rather BMW actually makes their navigation system useable than offer carplay.
