Ontario pilot project to raise speed limits on 400 series highways

The province of Ontario today announced that it will be introducing a pilot project on 400 series highways, raising speed limits up to 120KPH.

These highways were originally designed to have speed limits of 70 MPH and the speed limits were reduced during the 1970's energy crisis, this never had anything to do with safety.

I think this is great news as there is nothing worse than being stuck behind some do goober in the left lane travelling at 100KPH on a road that was designed for 120KPH.

This is fraught with problems.

I say that because speeding is accepted here, you can sit on 100 and pass a crusier on the 401, they won't flinch. 120 is pretty common already without being pulled over.

So what's the new leeway at 120? Is it 130, 140? What is it?

As usual, this country just ties itself in knots with a lack of clarity on laws and policing.

I suspect that if the speed limit gets raised to 120 the enforcement will be stricter around the 120 mark. The reason people are driving 120 and 130 is because that's what the road were designed for, the confusion comes from the fact that the OPP aren't consistent with their enforcement of the current speed limits because most of them realize that 100 is ridiculous. Let folks drive 120 and hammer them at 125.

I'll just point out that we have a small portion of our state with 137kph limits and a large portion at 128kph, it hasn't killed off much of the population. You guys should be fine. Until the québécois visit...

Holy shit finally.

Does that mean the speed limit where you get towed is gonna be placed higher, so 170km instead of 150km I wonder.

Please
Everytime I go on the 417 from Gatineau, Ontario drivers seem to be way worse when hogging the left lane.

150 isnt the tow point. 50 over the speed limit any where is (100km in a 50 or 150 in a 100)

It's true, while quebecois are more aggressive drivers they understand and respect the left lane: it is for passing

I was just in Toronto the past couple days. Thankfully due to it being a weekday trip I avoided much traffic, but the 100 kmh speed limit is infuriating. I can understand it in a metropolitan area, but not in the middle of nowhere.

Everybody in the left lane was doing 75-80 mph anyway, which is like 125 kmh I think. They had massive fines listed on the side of the road for these relatively normal speeds.

I suspect they will amend that section of the Highway Traffic Act so that it'll still be 150KPH gets you towed, but I guess that's something they'll have to figure out yet.

Awesome. The speed limit on these has always felt arbitrary and people obey it about as little as they obey the limit on the M1 in the UK.

I'd be happy with them reigning in on the leeway they give speeding as long as they don't crack down to Australian levels.

132kmh is the upper limit in almost on motorways in Europe for many years.. 140kmh is the psychological fine limit.. living in states is really fun for cheaper better cars but this speed limit thing is a pain in the apple..

I got pulled over number of times on 401 going to Toronto through Detroit back in the day. If I remember correctly, speed limit was 80km for good 30-45 min. Largest ticket I got on that freeway was $1k and a date to show up in Canadian court. LEO told me if I was a Canadian citizen he would have taken me to jail.

My understanding was that the Speed limit used to be 70mph, then lowered for “fuel savings” in the ‘70’s.
Considering the advancement of roadways, tires, ABS systems etc....the limit should be 120kph.
