New Tires - Can't find our other thread!

Hey as the title says, I wanted to provide an update on the new tires that I have.

It's been about a week, week and a half since I got new tires on my 30i.
Updated with the Pilot Sport All Season 4. Cost me roughly $1460 for a set of four.

Someone had said that ... it was gonna be problematic going to an all season, so I thought it'd be important to come back and give periodic updates for those of you that are looking to get new tires soon (which should be all of the 2021 crew about now)

That being said: These tires are actually quite nice. Keep in mind, I don't motor cross, drag race or anything crazy. When I first got them on, I noticed that ... it almost felt like I was losing traction often. Did some testing around with sharp accelerations and quick stops, zig zags and sharp turns.

After a couple days, I must have broken in the new shoes because they feel great and well planted. Do they holdup as well as the OEM? No, but that was expected. They are quiet and reduced the amount of noise quite a bit. Grip is still pretty damn good and taking sharp turns still feels confident to stay right in place.

I know this was a big topic not too long ago which is why I'm surprised I can't find that thread again, but if you're in need and want a little more longevity out of the tires (perhaps every day commuter) then I do suggest these tires.

Tires need a break-in just like the rest of the car.

Needs a few heat cycles & a few hundred miles for the mold release compound to wear off

That's how I felt as well. I wanted to make sure it was known in case someone comes back saying handling sucks and asking why I recommended them based off of their initial impressions.

Is this the thread you were referring to: https://g29.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1942661

I have been preparing for mine to be delivered (in a couple of months) and tires is one of the things I have been focusing on. I have this thread bookmarked.

YEEEES that's it. I did a search for TIRE in thread title and it didn't come up. Of course I found it after I posted, but thank you. LOL I am debating if I want to make a short video on it too or not.

I was concerned with driving on the Summer only tires when I get mine delivered in December. Up here in the West Texas/South Plains area we can get really cold (for sure under 30/40 degrees F. So I want to have tires better equipped to handle that instead of the summer only. My dealer said we can order some tires for winter and they will install them on the car when the car is delivered, then I will keep the summer only tires and change them out when it stays above 40/45 degrees F.

Here in San Antonio, it gets cold believe it or not. Can get into the 20's. During the winter, it's usually in the 30's however.

OEM tires did just fine! Even in the rain. Main reason why I went to all seasons was because of tire longevity more so than grip during different weather conditions.

That is good to hear. Do you get snow or ice? We do not get it much here, and am not really concerned too much. If it does snow, we can take my Wife's Explorer. My main concern is that I have always heard and read that Summer only tires should not be used in under 40 degree F temps. So, it is interesting that you said yours were performing fine in the 20s. That is good to hear.

Ice, yes... rarely, but yes. Snow? Every 30ish years. Cold and wet... yes.

However, I would avoid driving a sports car in those kind of conditions anyway. No issues on dry roads for sure no matter the temperature. case in point.. top down in 31 degree weather with my kid at 0600 going to cars and coffee!

I agree, nothing wrong with driving in the cold with the top down. I doubt I will ever get out in the ice or snow in my Z4, unless I can help it. I work at home and can use the wife's car if needed for that. I just know sometimes the ice can sneak up on you and you don't see it.

Yes, exactly. I had more issues with wet (hydroplaning) than ice. Can't say that i've gone out of my way looking for it. Cold and wet, though, OEM summer tires were fine. Just... don't go nuts.
