Sorry to say it but she's an alcoholic. At her age I don't think there's much that you can do to stop her from drinking at all. She already has a record for drinking and driving, and has a breathalyzer in her car, if that's enough to stop her from drinking I don't know what else she's looking for. If it was me I would stop her at a glass or two, if she's not happy then she can go drink somewhere else.

I'll put down a regular 750ml bottle of red with dinner if I'm having a nice dinner and not think too much about it to be honest, but that isn't every week. I'll probably do that this Saturday because I plan on grabbing a steak and some Caesar salad and that and do it up since my wife has to work.

Normally, we'll have a beer with dinner maybe 4 days a week. Sometimes I'll follow it up with a scotch.

I used to drink more where I could easily be up around 6 drinks a day on the weekend, but I've found my desire to do so is waning, so that now it is maybe 3 drinks a day on the weekend, sometimes not even that.

It has gotten to the point where I look at the bottle of scotch, then look at the time and if it is 9pm or later and not the weekend, I'm choosing to go with water instead. If its the weekend and I'm gaming, then I might pour myself a glass.

To quote Larry Miller, 'one is not enough, two is too many, and three is not enough'

I'm currently in a tapering off phase. Drinking leads to more drinking, snacking and staying up late, not necessary.

I'm right there with the bottle of wine. In fact the missus typically gets a bottle so she can nurse her one pour all evening because she knows I'll knock the bottle out by the end.

Now, I've been told it's because of the carbonation but craft beers, especially my favorite full bodied IPAs will get to me pretty quick. I have to treat them with respect.

The pro is social connecting and a bit of relaxing.
The cons are so many.

I thought my dad was an alcoholic because he would drink when he got home, and get mean and sometimes violent. But he didn’t have to drink, could stop and could go for extended time without drinking.

My wife is an alcoholic. If she has a bit of wine, she will want more. She got to the point of drinking bottles of alcohol daily, starting as soon as I left for work. Had it hidden all around the house. High functioning alcoholic with huge tolerance for it. Wrecked the car (no one hurt), twice in ER to be dried out, I really forced her into rehab. After rehab she was sure she was able to drink; my reading suggested no alcoholic every recovers, they just learn not to drink at all. The brain tricks them into thinking they can control it, and then demands more and more again.

So she drank and very quickly was in over her head again. Picked her up from a night in jail (PI, the cop was very nice, the car was very damaged). Told her me or alcohol; she chose me and quit then. 4 years ago this coming Monday.

I don’t laugh at jokes or memes about excessive drinking.

if she crashed the car don't they do a breath test? It's par for the course in Australia, you crash a car they stick a breathaliser in your chopper.

Not if I get there first and get it removed. Non-injury single vehicle. A lot of luck rode with this one; but luck was getting close to running out. Today she recognizes how close she came to something really serious happening; then she was invincible.

Garage List
2016 BMW M5 F10  [0.00]
Used to shut 1 particular bar down 5 out of 7 days a week back in the single life days. While it was "fun" to "know" most of the waitresses.....it did come at a cost of a DUI in the end. Since then, I haven't really drank much other than a drink or 2 on holidays and such. Fast forward about 25 years...now I enjoy 2-3 Mike's Hard Lemonade daily. While I dont get drunk from it...it calms my day down a bit after I get home from work. Hit a bonus deal the other day and found Mike's 12-packs on a BOGO...so now I have in the garage 13 cases LOL.

She'd probably die if she stopped to be honest. She's been a functioning alcoholic for a very long time. She's rarely with us - every 3-4 yrs. It's my wife who has had to deal with her Mom for a long time - but really all of that is a separate thread topic.

Well, I work in the bev-alc industry so I guess I benefit from you all drinking and drinking and drinking. Myself, I hardly drink. I get a hangover and heartburn after 1/2 a drink these days. Not worth it.

Weird, whiskey doesn’t give me heart burn… wine however… I can’t even smell that shit without getting heart burn!! One of the top reasons I don’t drink wine.

I have two jokes on the topic, or maybe not. You decide.

1) I don’t drink anymore. Or any less.
2) there are people who complain about drinking before Noon. I like to refer to them as “amateurs ”

Oh I use to think there were lots of pros about it. Then I realized they weren't pros for me they were reasons to run from things. Stopped drinking close to 6 years back and amazingly life got a lot better for me.

Fast forward to working in the finance/investing world and a fine single malt scotch was a relaxing reward after a long week. After I got married at 28 my social drinking really started to taper off up until today - 12 yrs later I don't really drink at all, accept for maybe a glass of wine or champagne during the holidays.

During the pandemic I have noticed more marketing of the glamorization of alcohol - particularly by celebrities like The Rock, Clooney, McConaughey etc.

Anyway, as I walk passed the beer isle at the grocery store and opt for a kombucha — I do often wonder, am I missing anything?

What are the benefits of drinking and are they worth it?

As a surviver of two long stays in rehab, I'd say it was all bad news, with no upside for me.

Giving it a try to stop as of March 1st. My neck and my chin have become one and I'm not digging it (exaggerated but)

Problem is, mentally I will say wine doesnt count against not drinking b/c its grape juice

Oh, it counts. If it didn't then I could say I haven't drank in years.

Cheers.
