I am an Actuary now. Back in college I did a lot of web programming (which I don't consider real programming). I interned for Principal coding in COBOL

IT jobs are still pretty competitive, for sysadmin in Chicago you are looking around 80-100k, for California I would suspect it would be quite a bit more due to cost of living ~125k.
