Brake Dust
What do you all do about it? I mean my God these brakes are the WORST for producing dust.
What are my options other than living with it or getting a recurring membership to my local Mike's Car Wash? |

Get wheels that match the color of the brake dust so it's less noticeable

Get some ceramic pads, if you don't want to deal with it. I think Akebono makes them now? Otherwise, wear it as a badge of honor -- good pads dust.

I was using an armour all spray. It worked alright. Is the only product of theirs I've used. I'm about to put the summer wheels/tires on and I'm trying out chemical guys wheel sealant this time around. It went on really easily, and had all good reviews.

Sonax wheel cleaner is the answer to all brake dust.
I use the BMW wheel gel every wash, Sonax every few washes, and Iron-X maybe once every 1-2 months. I usually add a degreaser every few washes after I clean the wheels with one of the above cleaners; I've found using a degreaser really brightens up the wheel that extra step. |

Will the Akebono's not stand up to track abuse?

I ran the POWERSTOP - Z16 EVOLUTION CERAMIC BRAKE PADS on my 1 series and they were very low dust and usually washed off easily. The problem with the 2 series is I can't find anybody making carbon ceramic for front & rear yet. They all only supply the front.

1051609 ceramic for front only...the others are semi-metalic. I called them and they do not make them as of yet for the rear...the front are almost the same as the 3 series and that is why they are already available. They claim the semi-met are much lower dust then the stock BMW pads though

I'm going with the semi metallic. I just did one track day with the car and now I have 800 miles left on the rear pads according to the computer, so I'm just going to switch them all out to cut down on dust. I don't plan on tracking it anymore, but if I do, I'll get some carbotechs.
If you look at the info button on rock auto, according to centric, the metallics are rated 9/10 for dust resistance and the ceramics are 8/10 |

Cool Carbon Pads, M235i
I bough these and have put on about 200 miles so far. They have a much kinder initial bite and seem to have very low dust. I bought them from ECS Tuning. It was super easy to do and I am very pleased so far. I will give an update in a few weeks.

From years of changing out pads at the track, I've found that I just press on the old pads while they are still in the calipers to compress the pistons. This time I just used my hands to push on the pads to compress the pistons and free up the pads. Sometimes you need a flat bladed screwdriver to gently push on the pads against he rotors.
