BMW Z5 Production Reportedly Outsourced to Magna Steyr

BMW Z5 Production Reportedly to be Outsourced to Magna Steyr

COMMENTS

A report out of German newspaper, Kleine Zeitung (via Automotive News), says that the next gen Z4, likely to be called the Z5, along with the Toyota model (presumably Supra) with which it shares a platform, will be manufactured by Magna Steyr, an Austrian manufacturer.

BMW had stated that it would contract Magna Steyr to build a new model next year after it decided to end production of the Mini Paceman and Countryman, currently being built by Magna Steyr, but the name of the model has not yet been announced.

Demand for two seater roadsters is not high and Z4 sales fell 47% in the first quarter. When asked whether it was still financially worth competing in the roadster segment, BMW CEO Harald Krueger said: "BMW has a long roadster tradition." "We will occupy the segment once more. It's not big, but it's important for the strength of the brand."

Magna Steyr is a unit of Canada's Magna International and it specializes in building lower volume cars, ideal for a niche model like a roadster. The Graz factory currently produces the Mercedes G Class, along with the MINI Countryman and Paceman.

Looks to me like BMW are just not that interested in investing too much time and effort in to the Z5

Cool, a Canadian made BMW. Magna also built the smart car chassis.

Z5 = Contractual Obligation Roadster.

It was one thing when VW contracted out to make the Karmann Ghia happen. Same with the star-crossed Porsche 914. This? No.

It's a shame no coupe version is being planned because that'd likely increase demand. Considerably. And that's perhaps why BMW isn't planning one in the first place. It has no place, no desire, and no investment to build it past a certain volume.

Either it's time to get out of the two seater roadster market, or ...

... it's time to move the Z model(s) up the model hierarchy.

Would it make sense to call the next-gen model Z6 and position it as a 6-Series roadster?
After all, there won't be a next-gen 6-Series cabrio. May be a niche there for a roadster.
It might be more or less a Benz SL competitor in size and price, but sportier.

It's almost reads like a proposal for an experiment on "how little can we do, and still put a Roundel onto sheet metal".

This is incorrect. As you will see they have invested much time and resources. It is known as the Pooled resources concept so it is developed jointly with the best engineers from Toyota and BMW.
It is very advanced for its segment with its pooled resources of lightweight materials.

It looks like it'll be even bigger than the current z4. Is that the case?

Sales of the current Z4 will continue to fall more. A new one is needed.
Probably the M235i is absorbing the sales.

I like the gap the TT is filling for Audi. I don't like the TT per se, but I would love a BMW competing in this segment. 2 seater not necessarily a roadster (loved so much the previous Z4 coupe).
To me the TT is like the pricier coupe 2 door alternative to the A3 Sedan.
I think this strategy makes more sense than what BMW is doing with these cars.
Roadsters are not particularly attractive in some countries because of the security situation.

I doubt it will be much bigger.

No folding hardtop will help with proportions.

It says Magna Steyr is Austrian and a unit of the Canadian Magna International.
Production plant is in Graz, which is Austria.

Well we all know that they sometimes bolt on extra body panels onto the cars to make them look different than they really are, we do the same things to our vehicles, it's common practice, as you can see below

E89 is about 8 years old, no shit sales aren't going to be good. Make something worth buying and people will. There's a real market for good, 2-seat sports cars

Oldest car in the lineup? Can't think of another but I've already started drinking

You are aware that SL's cost more than even the 7 series and go beyond $200k, right? The M6 competes with the SL550 in terms of price, and not for long since this new generation is reported to have an E63 coupe as a direct competitor to the M6. The i8 goes right against the GTS in terms of price - somewhere between an SL550 and an SL63. The Z4 is an SLK competitor and any potential Z5/Z6 roadster would be perfect to take on the F-type range at about $70-120k.

IMO the closest SL competitor from BMW was the Z8 and that car needs to make a comeback!! A future Z8 M with the S63tu under its long hood to take on the GTS/SL63 and a $200k+ Z8 M60i to take on the SL65 would be awesome. A BMW fan can dream right?

I like where you're going here... but may I suggest, while we're resurrecting the Z8, also resurrecting the S65? If BMW literally did nothing more than drop an S65 in the original Z8, wedge the M4 interior in there... and slapped a low six-figure price on it, it'd sell.

If they can't bother making something that is at least competitive on a value basis with a Boxster S they should just give up the on segment completely, really. Consumers have not been fooled by the repackaged E90 chassis based E89.

More interested in the Supra if it isn't a roadster like the Z5.
