Bmw 316I N13 1.6L Oil Leak, New block?
*I am posting this here since there is no N13 technical forum.
I am the owner of a 2015 (produced in 2014) BMW 316I (uses the same engine as the 320ED), its a 1.6L N13 engine, still has 6 months for the warrenty with only 40K miles. yesterday I took the car to the dealership (my friend said he saw a start of a leak in the engine) to have them take a look at the car, I was told the car will need a new engine block becasue of a leak in the current one,I forgot to take pictures except for 2 spontaneous pictures. View post on imgur.com (there is one leak right above the missplaced belt and another one right next to where the belt is supposed to sit on). should I insist on getting a completly new engine? should they even replace the block? am I supposed to ask for an extended warrenty if they change the engine block? will it effect future sale value? I dont have knowladge about cars whatsoever and im starting to freak out, dealer also suggested to keep this engine block till a month before the warrenty ends and only than change it??? Any help will be apriccated! |

If it really needs a new block the labor cost to transfer all of the parts from the old block to the new would probably get you up into the range of what a new engine would cost. In any event BMW regional will make the decision, based on which is the less expensive option. It's not up to the dealer to decide.

honestly that don't even look like a fresh oil leak looks like oil was spilled at some point and make it down by the belt ... look at turbo oil lines and from main seal ... Also did they gave you exact reason why it needs new engine ?? I just never heard that you need to replace whole engine block because of oil leak. Obviously unless engine is blown. Are they doing it under warranty ?

You replace the block when it's cracked. I don't see that. Give the engine a thorough cleaning, then keep an eye on it daily to see where the oil is dripping from. It's probably a seal or a gasket, very unlikely a cracked block.
