Anyone come from an M3/M4 Vert?
Planning long term and thinking that given an M40i is about as fast as an M4 Vert, and I drive solo 95%, that my next car should be an ED Z4 instead of a new M4. Has anyone made the switch? Thoughts?

I didn't make the switch, but was deciding between an M4 and a Z4. Like you I drive solo 95%+ of the time, and don't regularly need massive storage capacity. The roadster styling and handling of the Z4 appealed to me for that reason, plus I prefer the convertible look of the Z4 to a convertible M4. Obviously an M4 would have also been a fantastic vehicle, I just didn't need the additional space, power, and gas bill!

I also looked at the M4 'vert but despite the Z4 M40i not being "a real M car", the weight difference and lower CG would seem to give the Z4 a performance advantage.....it also looks "sportier" (though I like the M4 looks too) . Then there is the price difference which is significant. easy decision unless you need a 4 seater or X drive, of course

Pretty much my question too - I'm on my 2nd M4 vert (ind, comp) and would get a 3rd, but the new one won't be out so it's probably the Z4, the new M3, or the M2. I think the M8 is too big, but I"ll see.
Anyway, would love to hear about performance from a vert owner who can compare because I love my M4 comp, although I have to say while it's a faster car than the 2015 (due to many factors, not just the slight power increase), I sort of like it less because it's not as mean/badass/scary. The original software on the F83 made the car a vicious bitch, whereas the 2018 comp is tamer in comparison. And example being the DCT kickdown at freeway speed won't throw you into 3rd, instead it picks 4th (no biggie for me as I never use that, but it's an example), and the DCT shifting is much wussified. Overall the 2018 is faster and smoother, but it lost some personality in the trade. If the Z4 has the same tame personality (or tamer ), I'd be willing to trade the top down thrills for the new M3's insanity. |
