Limp Mode '12 335i

Hopefully anyone can help me out with a problem I've been having on my 335i. I'm driving on the highway at about 90 and all of a sudden the electric fan turns on. It's really really loud I can hear it over my engine. As the fan turns on my mph dropped to 78Mph. I couldn't surpass 80mph at all. I put it in sport mode my RPMs are at 5 and 6 and still can't go faster than 80mph. Little background on the car (jb4 map 5, VRSF downpipes, chargepips and intercooler. And sometimes running E85 on the car 4 gallons) the forum won't let me post the video of the issue.

Upload the video to youtube or another platform and share.

What codes do you have? Any logs or data? What was oil/trans/coolant temp when it happened? What happened after you got off the freeway?

We need significantly more information to even try and help.

You can see the oil temp in the video, it's showing at minimum (under 160F). Something is wrong if it's still reading minimum after 10-20 minutes of driving at 55F ambient.

Exactly what I was thinking. I had a mechanic try to diagnose it over the phone and say it's the water pump but i don't suspect that. My JB4 will be here later this week so I can get any error codes.

Might be as simple as the oil temp sensor on the oil filter housing, but can't be sure. If you had a simple OBD reader, you might be able to check the oil temp and water temp reading to see if the values are even showing up. The JB4 should give you the ability to check that as well.

Edit: I may be incorrect, realoem says the sensor on the oil filter housing is oil pressure. The oil and water temp is under the intake manifold.

Thank you guys so much for this information, it goes a long way. I'll ask my tuner because he should have that cable if not my JB4 cable should be here soon . Hopefully that tells me the problems. Thanks again you guys !

Yeah this is the first thing i noticed as well. I am very cognizant of oil temp. I wont go above like 10-15% throttle or 2500 rpm until my oil it as 210F.

Oil temps lag coolant temps so the vehicle could encounter a overheat condition and then enter limp mode before the oil temp gauge records an uptick in temps..

My gut is thermostat or water pump but of course without codes you won't know for sure.

I was thinking that if one of the coolant/oil temp sensors is not reporting correctly, the system might go into panic mode and spin the fans/water pump at full speed and cut power. I guess the thermostat being stuck open could cause something like this too.
