mhd vs bm3

I am a week into owning a 2017 440i coming from an n20 and I already feel the urge to tune it. While I know about bm3 a good bit from the n20 community how is mhd? Does it make better power or ensure more engine reliability?

They're both roughly the same. MHD doesn't have a resale/transfer option, but is a bit cheaper.

Congrats! Great choice going from N20 to B58 engine. Can't go wrong with BootMod3. Flash a BM3 Stage1 tune. Watch Kies Motorsports YouTube channel for tons of ideas. Lots of videos on mods that Chris has done with his 340i that work well on your 440i.

Do you have a warranty? If so, kiss it goodbye.

It does not have a warranty so we are all good, the previous owner did not buy any extended warranties.

I was checking them out, I knew a bit about bm3 from having an n20 but never flashed it because of the timing issues, I just wanted to find out a little more about mhd because I do not know much about it.

BootMod3 vs MHD is a religious argument. Both are great, but guys will tend to support the platform that they have used. Very few have used both enough and are technical enough to provide a truly unbiased opinion.

I've used BootMod3 for over three years. Besides the excellent performance and reliability, the company (Pro Tuning Freaks) impressed me with free regular updates, excellent technical support and an enthusiastic helpful user community.

I've never had any issue recommending Bootmod3 to a newbie. Below is a link to a video that I often provide to show how to install BM3. It's the video that I used before flashing my car for the first time.

The guys that I know who use MHD tend to be more technical and more self reliant than the typical BMW owner. That's just my impression.

Hope this helps!

BM3 are the tuners and the software engineers
MHD are software engineers but not tuners. They buy tunes from third-party tuners.

In my opinion, you get better support with bm3

I do like it more because I sell it, that's not a secret.
It's like me saying you like MHD more because you bought it. Might be true but does not change the validity of your argument.

If what i said is wrong, I'm more than happy to discuss it.

The 2 main factors I have considered is that MHD is load-based whereas BM3 is boost-targeting and that an original BM3 license can be sold once and transferred to another owner.

If I'm not mistaken, all modern BMW's are load-based. MHD likes a bit more boost, BM3 likes a bit more timing. They're both similar.

+1 in fact they are all Torque based when it comes to targeting something. Load and boost are mostly limiters on these cars. I’ve been learning more and more on tuning these and N55 over the mast months, lots of fun using BM3 map editor

I just switched from an n20 to b58, and having the ability to get a completely new tune because of the license transfer is amazing. I've had the car for 2 days already and it's already flashed to stage 1. Went from 5.5 0-60 to 4.8 and 13.7 1/4 mile to 12.6. The main thing I dislike about bootmod3 is how hard it is to switch maps. Have to charge my laptop, connect it to the car, and even be connected to wifi (which means I can only swap maps in my driveway) but some of my friends have mhd and they're always swapping their maps on the go from their phone.

With MGFlasher you don't even need to connect your phone, you can switch between maps even when you are driving, that's great and handy.

BM3 has had direct phone flashing for awhile now. Don't need a wifi agent or laptop anymore.

Just download the BM3 app and use an adapter to connect your iPhone or Android to the car's ODB. It's been available for a year I feel like lol.
