Z4 aftermarket performance options?
I know the G29 Z4 has the same drivetrain as the Supra. I am not considering the Supra b/c I want a convertible.
Clearly, the Supra aftermarket is great. What about the performance, and even appearance, aftermarket for the Z4? Also, while I am here, did the 2019-20 Z4 have all the same factory options that the 2022-23 has? If not, what are the differences? |

With respect to aftermarket, there is some but not alot yet. More seem to be coming up by the day.
on the 19-20 vs 22 year models, the dividing line seems to be 21 v 22. For the latter, the wireless charging port went away and there seem to be touchscreens missing in a few. With that said, if you go used; get the M40 with Executive package. |

Anything that works with the B58 in the Supra should work in the M40i Z4. So, piggybacks like the JB4 and JB+ work. The new ECU is locked differently than older ones and the only cure is to send it to Russia at this point to have it unlocked, or run a piggyback. Downpipes, charge pipes, intakes, strut bars to and suspension components should all be common too. I bring up the commonality because there's more going on in the Supra world and you can look at the MKV Forum (Supra) for ideas.
Cat back exhausts are different between Supra and the Z4 because of the different bodies (sure wish the Z4 came with a quad exit like the other M cars). Even things like rock guards are different. |

My understanding is that the M40i Z4 gets the M badge in all markets but the US. AWD and 500hp from the factory would be nice though.

In my opinion there is a younger demographic for owners of the Supra and they are more interested in purchasing after market products in order to customize their cars.

Lots of debates on this but what is in the cars is what the difference is. Mxxx get some M parts but not all of them. I like to rattle the purists with my Z4 M40i. When they comment on the fender logo I mention how not all M cars are the quick way home against the Z4. They quickly go into terminal meltdown then I listen to them about how I just don't understand & if I just had a "real" M car, yada, yada. In fact the first released 240's also got an M fender badge in the US for one model year. The purests complained to BMWUSA who complained to BMW AG & the badges came off the next year. BMW is sensitive to complaints from BMWUSA about M logos because we absorb about 50% of the total production. At any rate as of the time only M cars with a BMW M GmbH builders plate are M cars. BMW Mxxx cars & the Z4 have a BMW builders plate

The M40i gets you the nearly 400 hp 6-cyl over the turbo 4.

They are available for both the 3 & 4 series. This is a 440 conversion. I have run JB4's since 2011 when I beta tested for the special 335is which had a different engine N54 & ECU than the current 335's which were N55 based. Also had two turbos instead of one. My last JB4 powered car, 2013 135is, was traded as part of a doubled trade-in for the M4C. Its my understanding the current ECU's are locked pretty tight & the gains are less dramatic than in the past. I also heard that BMW has finally figured out how to determine if an engine had a piggy-back tune even if its totally removed. So warranty claims might be denied even if its totally removed. FWIW I find that the Z4 M40 is a bit traction limited out of the hole & on the 1/2 shift. Not sure how much power it can put down without AWD. Its quick but could be quicker. Same deal the M3/4 AWD will absolutely destroy the RWD versions heads to head, in a quarter or half mile sprint.

It does quite easily step out in the lower gears. |

Yeah I have them in my cart. I've been feeling for this though. A part of me doesn't feel like I should ... I don't have an M40i. A huge part of me knows that any other market, they'd be there lol. If I do it, i'd probably wait till July when I get a touch up on my PPF and Ceramic. I'm also a little worried about them not being official BMW stuff, and the color peeling off like in some of the reviews.

Guessing you could talk to the parts guy at your dealership and buy them from BMW if you're worried about quality, then there would be no worries about quality, color, etc. Might pay a little more, but there would be no issues. Even if the little M fender emblems are Euro only, they should have no trouble looking them up and ordering them for you.
