What's the first thing you do when you startup your Z4?

I hold the Drive Safety Button in for a few seconds until the green ring goes away.

When driving it off the lot the first time, the lane assist helpfully made its presence known when it decided I was too close to a white lane divider and jerked the steering wheel in my hand. It took me about 15 seconds to figure out how to completely disable all the automated safety features.

I should probably note that none of my previous vehicles have any sort of automated driver safety aids, so this is my first rodeo. For those of you with prior experience, it maybe wasn't or isn't quite as jarring.

While I'm not opposed to having these features (especially on long trips), in practice I am not inclined to trust them without some experimentation first. Also, I've been driving for a very long time without any sort of automated help, and that's a skill I want to keep current.

The first thing I do is GRIN!

I ended up turning off the lane assist after it tried to move me into another lane because there was a tar filled crack in my lane. AND there was a car already in the lane my car was trying to move into.

Music (occasionally have to re-pair phone so Apple car play works, lately this is becoming a weekly distraction)

then top down weather permitting, Shifter to left and sport+

I am not a fan of the "safety features" I turned off the steering immediately and turned off the braking after it almost got me rear-ended and for some reason every time the software upgrades I've got to turn it off again.

The software upgrade probably returns it to a default setting. 😉

It does for some but not others, it resets the braking but not the steering, the seat settings are fine but the auto start feature has to be reengaged.

I really miss the days when phones, cars TV's etc. weren't "smart" now the arrogant things think they know better than us about what we want and need.

Tried adaptive with the shifter to the left for the first time today - that’s my new default instead of comfort, I think.

Question about Adaptive: will it avoid the Sport modes until the engine is warm?

I thought I read a recommendation in the manual (? Or maybe it was in the forum?) to wait until engine is warm.

Like many others here, have just started to use Adaptive.

I drop the stick into drive and…..

discover that it didn't go into drive. Apparently, it takes a half second or so for the car to recognize the shifter after it is started.

I agree that the electronic interlock between the shifter, and the cars other sensors like the seatbelt and the door position sensors, is a little too cozy, IMO. It may be that the brief pause occurs as the car interrogates other systems for a status before it allows the transmission to go into gear.

For instance, the day I drove it home I got it stuck on my driveway the first time I tried to park it in my garage - after I put it into park and got out to open the garage door, I evidently didn't close the car door fully and it wouldn't go into gear and I didn't see anything about the door being ajar or open on the dashboard display.

I still haven't tried to recreate that or figure out the interlock between the door sensor and the seatbelt, or whether there is in fact a status message and I just didn't see it. But it creeps me out that one or maybe two trivial non-critical sensor failures could prevent the car from moving even though there's absolutely nothing wrong with the driveline.

Also -- assuming this blocking action is necessary -- from a usability standpoint, it would make A LOT MORE sense to prevent the car from going into gear in the first place if some sensor state condition isn't met, rather than dropping it violently into park after it starts to move. I really thought the transmission was defective for a good 15 seconds or so when it wouldn't stay in gear.

Here's the sort of hypothetical this discovery has me pondering: You're driving with a passenger on a quiet 2 lane road at night, and stop momentarily so the passenger can briefly get out to drain a drink container on the shoulder. While you're waiting, the lights of a semi truck appear in your rear view mirror. So your passenger jumps back in but fails to close the door fully or is fumbling with the seatbelt while you're trying to get underway and back up to speed - will the car refuse to move because a couple of sensor loops are in an open state? I don't know the answer, and that bugs me. Further, imagine this is happening for the first time, and neither of you understands why the car won't go into and stay in gear.

Top down, carefully back out of garage, music on, and (after engine warms up a bit) put it in adaptive or sport or whatever fits my fancy that day and off we go.
