Looking for a set of sunnies

Having a hard time googling up what i want so thought i'd hit you guys up. Not looking for super fancy but want something durable/flexible in a semi-sporty style.

These would be ideal, my son has a pair, but adult sizes are tiny. DOn't want to drop $300 on a pair of Oakley's.

https://www.smartbuyglasses.ca/desig...-1-540976.html

Any thoughts?

I'm on my second set of Knockarounds from REI (actually the second ones should be arriving in a couple days). Cheap, durable, get the job done.

All I wear are cheap $10 or less sunglasses from Amazon or whatever freebies I get from events and such. Never understood expensive sunglasses?

You used to have to pay $$$ to get sunglasses with polarized lenses.

Much more affordable now.

There is a HUGE difference in real lenses vs drugstore glasses.

I have worn Serengeti glasses (real glass corning lenses) for decades. IMO the best lenses available for driving and all around use. Not the most fashion forward - which to me is good. I like the classic looks.

Maui Jims are also great - and have many to fit the OPs description. I don't wear MJs much any more because they are all polarized and interfere with HUD, but they have great lenses as well.

Costa are also great around water, but again polarized only.

Polarized lenses are most useful around water or where there are harsh reflections, otherwise not a huge difference.

IMHO, Ray Bans are more about fashion, not eye protection

If you know anyone with a military ID, google Oakley si - they are all standard issue sunglasses meant to fit inside helmets. I'm on my 4th pair in 18 years, and love the flak jacket frames.

Maybe, I've just never been in a situation where I felt, damn, I really wish my sunglasses did/had xyz.

I just usually have a pair of cheapies on me or in the car and if the sun if bothering me I put them on and problem solved. Not worried about losing them or scratching them and when they break or the lenses get all messed up I just toss them.

Maybe I would feel differently if I had some fancy ones, but I can't get over paying $50 for some sunglasses let alone $200+.

AKA I'm a cheap bastard

I have a bunch of pairs. One in the house that I can put on to go outside and enjoy the ocean view. Another with a small chip that I use when mowing the lawn, etc. A dark pair of Costa in my car for driving in bright sun, and an old yellow pair in my car for fog/rain (amazing how they improve vision). The newest are shady rays (inside for ocean viewing) and were not very expensive. The Costas were expensive, and I’ve had Maui Jim and Revo that were expensive. I didn’t get the value of them and eventually they broke, etc so never replaced.

All I want really is no distortion, light weight and fairly scratch resistant. I toss them around in the car, etc so I don’t expect them to survive my poor care.

Oakleys are probably the cheapest for no distortion. Cheaper glasses have plastic / polycarb lenses that have some degree of cloudiness, crappy tinting, or softness that scuff or scratch easily.

Many more expensive glasses use polycarb or other lightweight plastic lenses such as Maui Jim, and they are great. But for clarity and durability plastic can never compete with quality glass like Serengeti, or the few MJ models with mineral glass lenses. Good plastics have their place when the lightest weight or safety is a factor.

If you've never had a nice pair of sunglasses, maybe give it a try sometime. There really is a noticeable difference. The best pair I ever had was some Oakley's I paid like $350 for in college, this was 2002 dollars as well.

They got lost along the way.

some of you not taking 5 seconds to click on the OP link. Or even read it in some cases.

Read the post and looked at the link. No experience with the linked product/brand. So related my experience with other brands and uses. Ok?

I used to only wear Maui Jim sunglasses. Now that I need progressive lenses for my daily glasses, I just buy the clip on polarized sunglasses at Walmart. For $15 they work great and if I lose or break them it doesn't hurt the wallet as much. I still keep a pair of my Maui Jim's on my boat for use as they have better side coverage and block the glare better as well.

I was more referring to being recommended $400 sun glasses and/or ones not even close to the style i was looking for.

Actually a question, Shadyreys, how have they been? They seem to be in the swing plane I am looking at.

I had quite a few pair of Shady Rays. Enjoyed them enough that I bought three identical pairs. One for my car, one for my wife's car, and one for the house to do yardwork and the like. Over time, the finish began to peel off. Lasted about as long as one could expect for the price. Good enough to be happy, but cheap enough that I didn't really care.

The finish is the primary reason I swapped to another cheap brand as the new one is "integrated" into the mold whereas the Shady Rays was more topical.

I've become a fan of Sunclouds. I first found them at Eddie Bauer and now get them from Amazon.
