Oil Viscosity
I have about 5000 miles on my 2022 X5 X40i and I want to change my oil. Not going to wait for 10,000 mile free one. I want to use either Liqui Moly or Motul oil but they only have 1 option for 5W30. I live in Florida so I want to run 30 weight oil instead of 20. I also do some light towing with vehicle. The manual says you can run either 0w20 or 0w30. I would like to hear your opinions about running 5W30 instead of 0W30. Both brands have the LL-01FE spec.
Also does anyone know the part number for Mann oil filter for this vehicle. Thanks in advance for your help. |

It may (though probably not in FL), but it will be negligible to imperceptible. Only thing to worry about is the extremely unlikely event of an engine issue during warranty with BMW requiring oil change documentation and blaming the problem on that.

There's literally no point in running 5W-XX anything these days. That was a technological limitation in oil viscosity in cold weather. You want the oil as this as possible in cold weather.
Thicker oil is not always better. It causes more friction in tighter spaces, which can increase heat and wear on top of increased fuel economy. You can do more damage than good. Plus, with thicker oil you risk starving parts in cold starts. |

FWIW, the oil service interval is NOT a fixed mileage...while it starts out at 10K-miles, it DOES adjust based on how the vehicle is driven, and could be shorter or longer than the initial starting point. If you don't have an oil analysis done to prove otherwise, you're almost certainly wasting money and resources.
Today's synthetic oils are nothing like yesterday's oil, whether that might be synthetic, or petroleum based. I don't understand why people ignore the engineers that built the thing on what's best for proper maintenance of their vehicle. Change it if it makes you feel good, but it's not really helping. If you tracked your vehicle or ran through dust storms regularly, yes, changing it early might be useful, but the CBS probably would have already told you to do that. |

I do my own oil changes between scheduled intervals, but let BMW do the scheduled one as it's still free.
Will be coming up on my scheduled change in a few months. Does anyone know if I can ask the dealer to use 30W oil as opposed to 20W that they will listen to my request? |

Here's a bit of context. Signing papers after an oil service, I was surprised to see the oil grade of 0w20 (while all the times before that it had been 0w30). I asked my tech-adviser about that, and was told that BMW had changed their specs so only the 0w20 oil grade was allowed for B58. Though, they could still use the 0w30 one at my risk (I.e. if the engine blows up, repairs won't be covered under warranty). But guess what happened the next time I came into the same service center for an oil change. Right! They poured 0w30 into my B58… Never asked them do so or otherwise. So I learnt the lesson - don't trust everything your tech-adviser tells you. |

maxim38rus thanks. Interesting that my manual for my B58 states:
Viscosity grades SAE 0W-20. SAE 0W-30. So not sure how your tech could have stated what they did. But yes agreed, all techs are not created equal. |
