Questions about z4 features

This is a dumb thread but I have to wait likely 3 more months before I get my car so what the heck, why not ask?

How good are the adaptive headlights? I saw on my build sheet that it will be coded to be anti dazzle from the factory, is that true and how good is it? I have the laser headlights in my x5 but they aren’t coded so I never really use them (I need to get it coded)

Is the driver side mirror photochromatic?

In the summer, like how it is now, is it possible to drive with the top down and the a/c running without getting all hot and sweaty?

Do the seat belts have auto tensioners (the BMW hug)?

That’s all I can think of for now but I’m sure to come up with more questions later. Thanks!

If it’s a US spec car, you won’t get the antidazzle headlights. Overall light output is great- especially for a low sports car. They do not swivel, but use a cornering light when you turn your steering wheel ~90 degrees. Noticeable if you’re looking for it.

Driverside and rear view mirror are photochromic. Passenger side hasn’t been photochromic since F chassis cars. It dims based on an optical sensor behind the review mirror and will tint the mirrors darker sooner if you tint the front windshield.

The AC is better than my x7. If I’m driving with a girl, no complaints with the top down with AC in 90F weather. AC clutch disengages when you’re at WOT if you’re worried about performance degradation.

There is no pretension measurement to the seatbelt.

Okay thanks. I guess I’ll just wait to get mine and then code both. That’s so dumb that even a my 25 spec car won’t get the anti dazzle. I thought DOT approved it

DOT approved an anti-dazzle function, but spec'd it different than what all the Europeans have. So the BMW anti-dazzle is still not compliant with US rules.

It can be challenging when the sun is overhead. It seems to work best if you direct the air only to lower or lower and middle vents. Air from upper vents quickly gets lost before you feel it. Tinting the side windows with a ceramic tint and keeping those windows up helps a great deal if it becomes unbearable with them down. IMHO tinting the rear window is a waste of money unless your car is parked outside in the sun frequently and for long periods of time. It has a decent tint from the factory.

My understanding (and feel free to correct me) is that there is no known way to get full "anti-dazzle" functionality coded in these cars.

Some changes you can make seem do to *something*, but it's not clear if that works as intended.

I was able to code the anti-dazzle into my m240, and though I can’t confirm it did everything it was supposed to, it definitely did most. I loved the ducking out of the left high beam to keep from blinding oncoming traffic, but leading the right one on to illuminate the side of the road. It also seemed to do the tunneling as expected. However, that car had moving lights, so what it was doing was very obvious.

Bimmer tech says they can do it, but it’s not cheap.

So our lights definitely auto level (and move vertically a lot) and have some capacity to focus the beam (wide vs narrow). I just manually turned the headlights on in the garage and you can see the beam moving around. I tried posting a video on YouTube to share, but accidentally had some music playing that got flagged as copyrighted.

I ran across a thread a year or so ago that discussed it either here on Bimmerpost or possibly Bimmerfest. My recollection is that there are multiple codes involved and if you don't code it completely it doesn't function properly. If you can find the thread, they did ultimately figure it out and describe the steps. However, procedure/codes may be different for different models.

Does it stay coded even after OTA updates?

CODE AT YOUR OWN RISK, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR A DEALERSHIP VISIT DUE TO A DIAG DROPOUT OR BMW LOCKING YOU OUT OF THESE FEATURES IN THE FUTURE.

G8x CODING FOR ANTI DAZZLE HEADLIGHTS AS OF 03/21 SOFTWARE UPDATE

Under the BDC module in expert there are 4 groups called LaMaster 1 through 4. They will be identified by LA1, LA2, and LA3. New values are after the space on each line. Print it out, these take some searching and you will drop out of diagnostic mode sometimes switching in and out of the app.

LA1

C_BLC_PRE_ENA | 1
LUT_FLC_FORWARDLIGHTING_Y | AFS

LA2

C_AFS_ECO_LEVEL_3_ENA | 01
C_AFS_ENA | 01

LA3

LUT_AFS_CODRV_HOR | standard/init
LUT_AFS_DRV_HOR | F040_G005_AHL...
C_CLC_CURV_V2 | 23
C_CLC_CURV_V3 | 28
C_CLC_EXT_ENA | 01
C_HBA_DIM_ENA | 01
C_HBA_GFHBA_ENA_V_HI | 3C
C_HBA_GFHB_ENA | 01

There are 4 more codings in the lane assist camera "KAFAS04" which we cannot currently access with bimmercode. Supposedly these will make the auto dim less aggressive while also making the beams tighter. The HBA will still perform extremely well without these changes. These can be changed with Esys.
I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS AT ALL ON G8X. IF YOU HAVE ESYS, PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

C_FLA_COUNTRY_WITH_MULTIPLE_REFLECTORS | 01
C_FLA_US_SENSITIVITY_MODE | 00
C_FLA_BS_ENTER_THRESH | 03
C_FLA_BS_EXIT_THRESH | 02

Thank you to "juhcobywankenobi" on the G20 forum for posting a screenshot of the cheat codes for this.
different for different models.
Here is once set of instructions. I’m not brave enough to try them at the moment. Looks like you need to use BimmerUtility or Esys to the full coding.

I’m assuming that I can still set climate control rules and automatic window rules in this car?

My 2023 has these features. There should be no change for the 2025 models in this regard.

As a point of reference, the "top down and A/C on" experience is much better than that of a Miata

Here in the South Carolina coast we get days of >110 heat index (80+ dewpoint, over 90 degree temps)

I cannot deal with top down AC on in those temps, top stays up those days.

What the car is really missing is ventilated seats , that would have helped a lot with top down and A/C on hot summer days

It is crazy to me that with all the options they gave you this was not one of them. My 09 Porsche had them and that car was antiquated when it came to features.

To be fair, I have ventilated seats in both of my X5s and they’re just okay. Idk how great a job they do given how bmw implements it

I had them in my 15 Vette and all it did was blow the air in the car so if it’s hot inside it’s just a hair dryer under your butt.
