325i oil tolerance - 1L per 1k miles?!!
hello all
couldnt find an answer to this on the forums so here's hoping... got a 2006 325i msport. owned it for 4 months now or so and done 5k+ miles. it has flagged up oil low twice now. put in 1-2L of oil since. called bmw about this and i was told the tolerance is 1L per 1000 miles so this wasnt abnormal!! i have never had a car that has used that much - mk5gti x2, subaru impreza, e46 325i - so is this true. havent notice a leaked either. thanks for any "next steps" or suggestions |

Yeah, this is standard for all manufacturers, personally i think its utter nonsense. I had a V6 Vectra and it just started using oil and blowing blue smoke in the morning, so went to the dealers who then stated it was within it's tolerance of 1litre per 1k miles.

I think [from BMW technical literature] the acceptable limits are 0.7l/1000miles for all cars except M3/5 Series which is 1.4l/1000miles.

Whats the miles mate? My 325i has just turned 50,000 miles and hasn't used any oil at all in 2000miles (since last oil change)

My 325i never used to use any oil at all so 1l per 1,000 miles IMO is not acceptable. I had a new 03 plate Celica T-sport some years ago that was using about this amount of oil. I asked them to either fix it or provide me with free oil top ups between services. When it dropped to 1 litre per 500 miles that fitted a new engine!! - At that point I was turning up every Friday morning asking for an oil top up as I refused to pay £10 per week for synthetic oil!
