which handles better e90 or e92

a year or so back bmw car mag tested several e90 and e92 335i and 335d mapped and unmapped back to back ultimately around a track an e90 335d was 1 tenth of a second quicker than a 335i e92 just wondering what the result would have been if the two had been the same body shape

I'd be amazed if it made any difference. Back in the day, coupes were generally stiffer (because of no rear doors, obviously) but nowadays bodyshells are so stiff anyway it's probably not an issue. In view of having two fewer doors (and all the gubbins like electric windows, central locking etc) the coupe is a bit lighter, but not by much - around 100Kg I think.

Actually the E92 is slightly heavier than E90.

Also in older cars the Coupe was more floppy. Especially in BMW as they never had a B pillar.

The 4 door saloon's obviously had this pillar and were stronger.

This day an age things have moved on and even without the B pillar there won't be much in it these days.

As to which one is quicker, I doubt there is naff all in it.

We talked about this before dxb - go to the spec pages on BMW's website and the e90 IS heavier than the e92 with the same engine.

I suppose that depends on your definition of heavier.

The e90 330d SE saloon is 1610Kg
The e92 330d SE coupe is 1600Kg

I guess in your world the e92 is heavier, not in anyone else's.

We did this last time, I don't know why you refuse to accept the manufacturer's figures. Surely they would know?

Sorry mate, no point falling out. Everywhere ive looked (in the past) the E92 was heavier than the E90. I'm not actually that bothered though.

I think the point to be made here that the fact there is only 10kg difference between the two, means its pretty shocking how heavy the E92 is.

It's like a 18 year old weighing 80kg and a 12 year old weighing 75kg.

I have read the E90 handles better than the E92 when comparing like for like M3s, but can't remember where.

I'm surprised the weight difference isn't more though.....

Wow, whooshy parrot.

Basically, you expect more than 10kg difference between the coupe and saloon.

Taking the E46

330ci se 1430kg
330i se 1505 kg

The E92 carries too much weight.

Perhaps it's down to all the extra kit the E92 comes with as standard?

I know the older E90's came without things like the DPF which is a hefty piece of kit.

My example showed that weight on its own is meaningless. Chuck in another piece of info and it isn't just a simple case of one is lighter than the other...

So at 18 the weight is reasonable at 12 it isnt.
So the e90 the weight is reasonable, e92 it isn't.

I've always thought the E92 is a larger car than the saloon, certainly looks longer to my eyes. Anyway, what makes you say the E92 weight is unreasonable?

Dunno tbh, you just naturally expect a coupe to have more than 10kg difference between that of the saloon.

Either the coupe is on the heavy side or the saloon is remarkably light.

The 330d is the quickest, regardless of whether it's an E92 or E90.
