5-Gallon Bucket w/Grit Guard
Everyone recommends using two 5-gallon buckets with grit guards for washing, but I have tried searching and can't find where people have bought these things!!!
You guys with these buckets, did you find them locally or online? Are they available at any USA chain stores? Thanks in advance!

Hey Fragadellic,
how did you get the specific dates for the progress of your car? I only have a build date of week 23 so far, but it looks like you found out the specific start and end dates for production.

The buckets are standard 5gallon buckets you can get from any Home Depot, Lowes, Target, Walmart, etc.
The "fancy" ones can be purchased online with dollies, a sturdy airtight cover, and a seat for sitting on. I find all of these to be extraneous and unnecessary. The grit gards, however, are absolutely a good value and cheap insurance. They will fit in any standard 5 gallon bucket as well as most 3 gallon buckets with the same diameter on the bottom of the bucket. They can be purchased here from DetailedImage, an e90post sponsor: http://www.detailedimage.com/store/p...roducts_id=494 |

I used to double bucket wash but stopped lately. I picked up a grit guard as well as a good sheep skin mit. I just hose the mit off after wiping the car then dip in the bucket and proceed. Any dirt not hosed off falls to the bottom of the bucket and held by the grit guard. I found the second bucket of water to be a waste of water. I have not caused or noticed any more swirls then before.

Just my own two-cents. I went to froogle and typed in grit guard. I got a deal that was almost 1/3 less than I could find elsewhere. I don't have the paperwork to get the name of the company (possibly Adam's Polishes). I had the bucket delivered overseas and, when it arrived broken, the company sent me a complete new one and told me to keep the other, which I was able to repair with Duct tape and saran wrap.

Excellent. I appreciate the replies. I got through the my new car prep with no problem, and no swirls. I will pick up the guards at one of those places for my Home Depot buckets.
FWIW, Wasting $0.50 worth of water to wash a $50K car is a fair tradeoff in my book.

I bought everything at Home Depot. Much cheaper. Bucket and grit guard separately. Target has one, but it's a low and long bucket with wheels. It has the grit guard built in.

In response to the ghetto comments, I have to accept that, although I would simply say I am practical and cheap. A second note is that I am military with some unconventional experience, I was taught to use what I have on hand to make what I have work. I am in the US for a few weeks but will post some pictures when I get back overseas...

Hey so does that Grit Guard REALLY work... tell me the truth... because I am skeptical that something so simple/cheap could really do that much... but if I see some positive comments on it, I may decide it's worth the shipping...

I've used the grit guard several times and have found that it works well. As with anything though, a piece of equipment is only as good as the operator. If you take your time and follow the advice of the experts all should be good.

So someone please explain to me why this doesn't work or what's wrong with this. I have the Mr. Clean sprayer but I fill it with Meguire's liquid and just use two mitts so I'm not taking the dirt from the bottom onto the top. Anything wrong with that?
guess I'm too lazy to keep bending over to those buckets. |
