Squeaking noise from rear drivers side wheel
Hi guys,
Wondering if someone can help. Everytime I drive over a rough surface road I get a mouse like squeak from the rear drivers side wheel. I'm certain its the rear wheel and its only on rough surfaces. Its definitely outside the car as the noise is only audible when the window is down. Driving over speed bumps does not reproduce it. I do have a bit of brake squeal from the rears but the OBC still shows 8k miles left. Could it be a brake warning sensor? is it on the drivers side / O/S rear wheel at all? The pads and discs visually look like they've got enough life (i know the OBC can sometimes be a bit out) Its a 325D LCI with 17,500 miles on the clock - if that makes any difference. Any help appreciated. |

could easily be brake sensor, mine were squeaking long before pads were worn out. When I did pull them off to have a look they'd worn through the first stage and the dealership mechanic said that that was definitely the cause. I went ahead and replaced my pads w/ Hawk and put new sensors on, no more noise.

Exactly that. The reason the noises in this thread are from n/s/f and o/s/r is that those are the brakes that have sensors. The other wheels don't.

Thanks for the reply guys, however this is whilst the car is in motion, not whilst braking or with the brakes applied. Is this still the same thing?
I know the brakes squeal a little when applied so if its still the sensor then that's fine as I'll look to change them sooner then at 8k miles. Just worried it might be something else that's all. |

Ah, mines not like that. You can't replicate the noise by pushing on that side of the car. A speed bump doesn't even replicate it. Those sound clips sound more like a worn bush to me.

Well, I took it into the dealers who said its the brake shoes. They removed them, checked them, re-adjusted and greased them and the pads up and all is now gone. However, I am now finding that the rear is making a knocking noise when going over sudden bumpy roads. The squeaking has gone now though. Any ideas what this may be? Its doing my head in now!

Maybe rear drop link, shocker has burst, something left slack after the repair I've even seen the rear seat not latched properly giving a right old noise!

Droplink and shock is fine. Its from the outside. I've noticed that they have slightly overly greased the back of the brake pads on the rear shims. I'm wondering if this excessive grease is causing them to slightly move under vibration?!

Could well be the shoes, there's 2 spring clips that hold them in position -one maybe loose or has fell out causing the shoes to hit of the disc or the back plate when you're going over bumps

Thanks for your help mate, appreciated. From visual inspection they haven't touched anything else (judge by bolt movement/marks). I was thinking it might be those springs too. Hopefully they can sort it tomorrow.

Thanks mate. Took it to the dealer and the technician sorted it straightaway which is good news. Another technician who worked on the car apparently must have forgot to adjust the handbrake back to 3 clicks (it was not locking at all but I didn't notice as its an auto). Therefore i think the shoes were clunking as the spring wasn't tight so was rattling inside.
All done and thankfully noise free |
